Deux équipes travaillent à un tunnel sous l’East River à New York : l'une, conduite par Jumbo Smith, a commencé côté Brooklyn ; l'autre, conduite par son rival Nipper Moran, a commencé côté Manhattan. Helen Leonard (Faye) has a beautiful voice. As she grows up, she trains to become an opera singer. Her instructor, however, informs her that her voice is pleasing, but not suitable for grand opera.
