Blood on the Land (Greek: Το χώμα βάφτηκε κόκκινο, translit. To Homa vaftike kokkino) is a 1966 Greek drama film directed by Vasilis Georgiadis. It was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Synopsis

Alors qu'une révolte paysanne en Thessalie se prépare en 1907, un syndicaliste est assassiné. Le fils du grand propriétaire terrien revient dans le domaine familial. Il a des idées libérales. Il s'oppose très vite à son frère aîné autant pour la gestion du domaine que pour le cœur d'une femme.

A young English tourist called Annabel meets a Greek shepherd during her vacation on a Greek Island. Petros est le fils d'un riche entrepreneur. Il s'intéresse peu à l'entreprise familiale, préférant la course automobile. Cependant, il apprend qu'une île va se lancer dans le développement touristique. Il convainc son père d'acheter des terrains sur l'île. Pendant ce temps, Flora, qui possède des night-clubs, entend elle aussi parler du projet. Elle décide elle aussi d'investir sur l'île. Elle y arrive en même temps que Petros. Rapidement, leur rivalité perturbe la vie de l'île. D'autant plus que des insulaires tombent amoureux des continentaux. Marina, propriétaire d'une taverne, s'éprend de Petros tandis que le pêcheur Nikolas s'intéresse à Flora, au grand dam de sa fiancée. Pour se venger, cette dernière se laisse séduire par Iasonas, le fils de la plus grande propriétaire de l'île qui s'inquiète de la tournure des événements. Finalement, l'amour triomphe.

Rumous have it that a Swiss company is making investment plans to develop a Greek island. A couple of Athenian enterpreneurs rush to the island to buy land and flip it for profit. The Athenian couple, a race-car driver and an actress, meet the resistance of the island's grand old lady who does not wish to sell land to outsiders. The business plans eventually fail to materialise but romance ensues between the actress and the son of the lady as well as the race-car driver and a local girl. The film has references to ancient Greek tragedy and contains elements from it such as a chorus.

Mary (Zoe Laskari) is a rich young lady that challenges problems in a traditional folk neighbourhood in Plaka, Athens, when she moves to play modern music in a store opposite a traditional taverna, where Fotis (Faidon Georgitsis), a bouzouki player, works along with Kostas (Kostas Voutsas), Sofia (Mary Chronopoulou) and others. The gang of the taverna soon turns against Mary, for the reason that she alters the character of the neighbourhood. Eventually, Fotis falls in love with Mary, but his friends margin him as he seems willing to sacrifice everything for her in order to be accepted by her social circles. A second love story involves in the film, as Eleni (Martha Karagianni), sister of Fotis, tries to attract Kostas using various ways.

Giorgos Merkos (Giórgos Foúndas) est lieutenant de police. Il a tellement de travail qu'il ne peux trouver le temps de rencontrer les parents de sa fiancée Anna. Alors qu'il doit se rendre chez eux, il arrête un criminel et commence une autre enquête, sur le meurtre d'une femme d'âge mûr, Julia. Il soupçonne le jeune mari de celle-ci, Alekos Petratos mais ce dernier était dans le train de Thessalonique au moment du meurtre et la tante de la victime est allée le chercher à la gare. Giorgos Merkos ne croit pas à cet alibi et réussit finalement à confondre le mari. Plus tard, il est persuadé que le demi-frère d'Anna, Dimitris Naskos, est coupable d'un viol. Durant son arrestation, Dimitris cherche à s'enfuir. Il est tué par Giorgos. Il s'avère alors que Dimitris était innocent. Giorgos démissionne et perd sa fiancée.
