Dance Kahani (meaning dance story; previously The Dance Diaries) is an upcoming Pakistani dance film directed and written by Syed Omar. Dance Kahani is produced by H2O Films and Ion Entertainment in association with Act One. The film stars Madeleine Hanna, Alamdar Khan and Vernin U'chong. Dance Kahani is perhaps the first film exploring the underground dance culture and free running on the streets of Karachi. The film was shot on RED using Carl Zeiss lenses, despite being an independent low budget initiative by a new generation filmmaker from Pakistan. The movie illustrates aspiration, dreams, and talent against the odds.

Synopsis

"With her dream of pursuing a professional dance career shattered, she must now fight the odds to keep it alive in a society she never wanted to be a part of." This is how Nizzy, an upscale British Pakistani, must survive her predicament.

Set some six years after the events of Saturday Night Fever, former disco king Anthony "Tony" Manero is now 25. He has left Brooklyn, and is now living in Manhattan, staying in a flophouse while he works as a dance instructor and as a waiter at a dance club, looking for his big break in the modern dance productions on Broadway. The breakaway he has from his Brooklyn life, family, and friends seems to have matured Tony and refined his personality, specifically represented by his diminished Brooklyn accent and his avoidance of alcohol and profanity. However, certain attitudes have not changed, as with his most recent girlfriend, the forgiving Jackie (Cynthia Rhodes). One attitude he holds consists of a double standard whereby he feels at liberty to see other women, but becomes vexed if he finds Jackie with other men.

The film is essentially a two-part program. The first half consists of a romantic comedy storyline involving an aerialist, played by Gene Kelly, who is drafted into the US Army but really wants to join the air force. During training, he falls in love with Kathryn (played by Kathryn Grayson), the daughter of his commanding officer, who has similarly put her singing career on hold in order to serve by providing entertainment for the troops. Unusually for this type of a film (and for this era of Hollywood), the character Kathryn has only recently met her father for the first time since she was a baby, her parents having divorced. A related subplot has Kathryn conniving to get her parents (played by John Boles and Mary Astor) to reconcile. During the first part of the film, Grayson sings several numbers and Kelly performs one of his most famous routines, dancing with a mop as a partner.
