Shot in modern-day Hong Kong, the film centres on protagonist Koo Chi-Ming, a hapless insurance investigator who while investigating the case of a beautiful girl who supposedly committed suicide begins being haunted by her spirit and eventually falls in love with her.
Based on an original story by Raymond Wong, Esprit d'amour is credited as the very first film directed by Hong Kong director Ringo Lam better known for his later 1987 film City on Fire starring Chow Yun-fat. Released in Hong Kong on 15 December 1983, the film took in a total of HK$14.1 million at the box office and gained one nomination at the 1985 Hong Kong Film Awards.
In 1998 Esprit d'amour was released on VHS in the United States and on DVD in 2005, a digitally remastered Hong Kong version was also released a few years later in mid-2008.
Synopsis
Koo Chi-Ming (Alan Tam) is a life-insurance investigator who while driving to his engagement party, loses control of his car almost running over a young girl, Siu-Yu (Ni Shu-Chun). Later upon arriving at his party he and his father (Bill Tung) begin being henpecked by his mother (Tang Pik-wan) and his fiancée Ivy (Cecilia Yip). Later after the party has ended, everyone decides to have some fun with a Ouija board by attempting to talk to a spirit. Chi-Ming's little brother explains that after they are finished they must send the spirit back, otherwise the person last holding the saucer will be haunted by the spirit. Elsewhere, Siu-Yu is on the roof of her apartment with her goddaughter Mimi drying clothes when Siu-Yu notices that Mimi is very close to the edge rushing forward to grab her, Siu-Yu's foot accidentally lands on a skateboard which sends her over the edge of the roof to her death. Back at the house, as soon as Siu-Yu dies, the saucer begins to show signs of movement and points out the name of the recently deceased Siu-Yu. The saucer then begins to circle violently around the board and everyone is thrown backwards, apart from Chi-Ming, who holds on until the last movement at which point the saucer flips over to reveal a small spot of blood indicating he will be haunted.Actors

The spirit of the late female singer Tsui Pan Han (Maggie Cheung) waits in the afterlife for a chance to be reincarnated. She meets the Godfather (Tsui Hark) who has found an appropriate musical family for her to be reincarnated with. Her opportunity to be born into the new family is ruined when Sam Kwai (Raymond Wong) takes the pregnant wife to the wrong hospital. Pan Han is given one month to find a new body to assume her reincarnation in, and decides in the meantime to harass Sam Kwai. One time, the head prefect Tai Cheuk-yee (Fennie Yuen) is possessed by Tsui to stir up a row in a sex club, causing a bunch of gangsters to be imprisoned. Kwai eventually summons Happy Ghost to help him out.

Ma (Lau Ching-wan) is kidnapped in a parking structure. His girlfriend Amy Fu (Amy Kwok) informs the police that though he had been jobless for a while and had a lot of debt, he was not a bad man. Police detective Pit (Tony Leung Ka-fai) later discovers Ma beaten, bloodied, and dangling upside down from the ceiling of an old abandoned hotel. The hotel in question is said to be haunted from murder-suicide of the original owner and his wife. On returning home, Ma begins starts terrifying Amy by behaving like the famous ghost of the hotel. The police begin to suspect that Ma's possession might be a ruse to hide something other crimes that are happening.

Mei-hsun Fang hails a taxicab, and is brought to an abandoned building by the driver, a wanted robber and serial rapist. The man beats and sexually assaults Mei-hsun, and leaves her for dead. Mei-hsun survives, and is able to identify her assailant in a police lineup, resulting in his execution by firing squad, an event which Mei-hsun witnesses in a dream the moment it occurs. The rapist's death does little to comfort Mei-hsun, who is plagued by nightmares and visions of the man, and is horrified to learn that she is pregnant with what she assumes is his child. Mei-hsun tries to have an abortion in secret, but as the procedure is about to begin, an invisible force attacks the doctor and nurse, and flings the former out a window.

In 1965, a couple (Sylvia Chang and James Wong) are doting on their newborn twin boys. Meanwhile, a dangerous gang leader named Crazy Kung (Kirk Wong) is being transported as a captive in the same hospital. Crazy Kung escapes and attempts to take one of the twins hostage. Jo-goo, a street magician (Lee Min-ki), notices a miserable looking girl, Yeo-ri (Son Ye-jin), in the audience during one of his performances, and she winds up being the inspiration for his “Horror magic show.” The show becomes a runaway success almost overnight and Jo-goo in turn, is now a successful stage magician with a model girlfriend. Yeo-ri works for Jo-goo, playing the specter in his show. Forward to almost a year later, the darkness inside her, something her colleagues sense, keeps her from truly connecting with them. When Jo-goo’s attempts to include Yeo-ri in a staff dinner finally succeeds, hilarious disaster ensues when she ends up blindingly drunk. Jo-goo calls Yeo-ri the next morning to sort things out, but when the phone disconnects with a weird sound, he decides to drop by her place for a visit instead. There, Jo-goo meets and engages in a game of hide-and-seek with a ghost child, which then scares the bejesus out of him later that night. As the two of them spend more time together, developing a fast friendship, Yeo-ri confesses the long story behind her gray, wan face.

The time is 1780, and Horatio Prim (Lou Costello) is a master tinker. He travels to the estate of Tom Danbury (Jess Barker) with a letter of commendation from General George Washington. The story is set in mid-19th century in Siam, during the King Mongkut Era and at the height of the Rattanakosin Dynasty, when Siam was plagued with wars with its neighbouring kingdoms. Mak (Mario Maurer) was drafted to serve in a war to invade against Kingdom of Konbaung, forcing him to leave behind his pregnant wife Nak (Davika Hoorne) at the town of Phra Khanong, not far from Central Bangkok. He was wounded during a battle and sent to a medical camp, where he met Ter, Puak, Shin and Aey, who later became his best friends. Meanwhile, in Phra Khanong, Nak struggled alone painfully to give birth to the baby. Shortly after, villagers in the neighborhood heard her singing lullabies to her baby, causing hair-raising chills and making them cower in fear. Rumours started circulating around the village that Nak had already died in labor and was now a ghost haunting the house.
