In a 1914 lower class district of Paris, content sewer worker named Chico (James Stewart) is criticized by his fellow citizens for being an atheist. One day, he witnesses a young woman (Simone Simon) being brutally beaten by her sister (Gale Sondergaard) for not entertaining a senior wealthy man in her sleazy bar. He sympathizes with the girl, Diane, and stops the fight. Later, Father Chevillon (Jean Hersholt), who is worried about Chico's lack of faith, offers him a deal: he will grant him a street washer job if he takes in Diane and opens his mind about believing in God. Chico agrees, and he prevents Diane's sister from turning her in to the police by claiming that she is his wife.

Paris, 1922. Jake Barnes vit à Paris depuis sa démobilisation de la guerre 14/18 et il est journaliste au « New York Herald ». Un soir, il se rend à un bal musette où il retrouve des amis dont le romancier Robert Cohn. Arrive Lady Brett Ashley qui n’est pas une inconnue pour Jake. Elle fut son infirmière à l’hôpital pendant la guerre où ils tombèrent amoureux mais à la suite de sa blessure contractée sur le champ de bataille, Jake est devenu impuissant. Depuis, ils entretiennent une amitié amoureuse. Pour tenter d’oublier cette déconvenue Brett multiplie les aventures. Elle a promis d’épouser un Écossais Mike Campbell, joyeux drille plutôt porté sur la bouteille, tout en étant très courtisée notamment par Robert Cohn qui tombe immédiatement fou d’elle. En compagnie de son ancien compagnon d’armes, Bill Gorton, Jake part à Pampelune en Espagne assister aux corridas. À peine arrivé aux fêtes de la San Fermin, Jake a la surprise de retrouver Brett entourée de tous ses prétendants. Le groupe ne se quitte plus, et participe à toutes les festivités : débarquement des taureaux, encierro à travers les rues, corrida… Brett se laisse courtiser par un jeune torero, Pedro Romero, sous le regard furieux de Robert qui finit par agresser le jeune homme. Le lendemain, Pedro triomphe aux arènes et Jake apprend que Brett s’est enfuie en compagnie du torero. Pour Robert et Mike, la fête est finie. C’est à Biarritz que Jake reçoit des nouvelles de Brett, elle lui lance un appel de détresse espérant démarrer une nouvelle vie avec lui.

The widowed Eurasian doctor Han Suyin (Jones) falls in love with the married-but-separated American correspondent Mark Elliott (Holden) in Hong Kong, during the period of China's Civil War in the late 1940s. Alan King, dont le père était un officier britannique et la mère une indienne musulmane, est un officier brillant mais aussi un métis, ce qui l'exclut de la bonne société anglaise. Orphelin très jeune, il a été élevé avec Karram Khan qui devient un chef rebelle contre les Britanniques et cherche à fédérer les tribus le long de la frontière. Au fort, la fille du général tombe amoureuse de lui, l'idylle paraît impossible à Alan qui propose de se sacrifier en tuant Karram Khan. Il échoue mais repart avec ses soldats à l'assaut du camp de Khan dans les montagnes. Khan est tué, Alan revient au fort en héros.

Its western summit is called the Masai 'Ngje Ngi,' the House of God. Close to the western summit there is the dried and frozen carcass of a leopard. No one has explained what the leopard was seeking at that altitude."
