Jan, jeune femme majeure vit seule avec son père, Stephen, un grand avocat miné par l'alcoolisme. Le père et la fille sont extrêmement attachés l'un à l'autre. Stephen a élevé sa fille dans un esprit de liberté, partant du principe qu'elle doit faire ses expériences elle-même et en tirer les leçons, ce genre de comportement place Stephen et Jan en porte à faux vis-à-vis du reste de leur famille. Stephen doit défendre Ace Wilfong un gangster accusé de meurtre et qui n'a que peu de chance d'échapper à la potence. Dans les coulisses du procès, Wilfong est présenté à Jan et les deux jeunes gens ne sont pas insensibles l'un à l'autre. Pendant que le procès se termine Jan rend visite à sa grand-mère qui fête ses 100 ans. au cours de la réception Dwight annonce qu'il a l'intention de se fiancer avec Jan. Stephen qui a réussi à innocenter Wilfong la rejoint un peu plus tard en compagnie de ce dernier. La famille fait alors comprendre à Wilfong qui n'est pas le bienvenu. Cette attitude choque Jan qui s'en va avec lui.

Gerald Meldrick (Clark Gable) and Anya von Duren (Rosalind Russell) are a pair of rival jewel thieves at large in India. Both parties are after the same prize, a priceless diamond owned by the Duchess of Beltravers (Jessie Ralph). Son père, chef d'un clan sur la côte ouest de l'Écosse, étant décédé en mer lors d'une tempête, Marget MacTavish console les autres membres du clan malgré son chagrin. Quand Marget et Jamie Campbell, un jeune pêcheur, se fiancent lors d'une cérémonie traditionnelle, M Campbell écrit à la Comtesse de Dunstable pour lui confesser que, des années auparavant alors qu'elle était la nurse de Jamie, elle avait dit qu'il était mort afin de l'élever pour elle-même. La Comtesse arrive avec son second mari, qui convainc Marget que, pour le bien de Jamie, elle devrait rompre les fiançailles. Malgré les protestations de Jamie, Marget use de son autorité de chef pour lui ordonner de la quitter. Marget part en mer pour quitter la région, mais son vieux bateau, peu en état de naviguer, commence à couler. Pitcairn sonne l'alarme, puis prie pour Marget pendant que Jamie prend le canot à moteur du yacht de sa mère pour la sauver. Les parents de Jamie acceptent finalement le mariage.

At 40, businesswoman Jane Vale (Pauline Frederick) falls in love with a much younger Robert Elliott (Malcolm McGregor), a employee from her factory. She promotes him to the position of her private secretary, and out of gratitude and to defend her reputation from rumors, he asks her to marry him. As described in a film magazine, Margaret Harding (Petrova) becomes the wife of Richard Harding (Standing) to save her mother from ruin.
