Synopsis
L'histoire commence avec une vieille grand-mère racontant à ses deux petites-filles l'histoire de la petite sirène. Malgré leur jeune âge, les filles ne croient pas à l'histoire, jusqu'à ce que leur grand-mère leur raconte une histoire. Il y a de nombreuses années, un jeune journaliste du nom de Cam Harrison qui n'avait pas réussi à gagner sa vie part à la recherche d'une bonne histoire en compagnie de sa plus jeune sœur, Elle. Là, ils vont au cirque et rencontrent une belle sirène piégée dans un réservoir de verre. Ils sont encore plus surpris quand la sirène apparaît devant eux comme une jeune femme avec des jambes. Le duo apprend vite d'une prophétie à propos d'une petite fille née sur terre, bénie du coeur d'une sirène. Avec cette prophétie venue à la vie dans Elle, ils sont de plus enchevêtrés dans un complot sinistre d'un sorcier qui souhaite garder l'âme de la sirène et la convertir au pouvoir.Actors

Walter Mitty is a negative assets manager at Life magazine who daydreams of adventures and has a crush on a coworker named Cheryl. Mitty works with photojournalist Sean O'Connell, whose images are highly regarded. O'Connell has sent Mitty his latest negatives and a wallet as a gift in appreciation of Mitty's work. O'Connell believes negative #25 captures the "quintessence" of Life and that it should be used for the cover of the magazine's final print issue as it converts to online status. The negative is missing, however, and Walter is forced to stall for time with corporate transition manager Ted Hendricks, who is handling the downsizing. While viewing the other negatives outside Life's offices, Cheryl approaches Mitty and suggests that he think of the negatives as clues to Sean's location. They look at three of them, including one of a person's thumb with a unique ring on it, and another of a curved piece of wood. A third picture of a boat leads Mitty to determine that O'Connell is in Greenland. Mitty promptly flies there to find him.

The film opens in 1991, with the funeral of a World War II veteran. Paul Robaix (Montand), a famous director, wants to shoot a film in Japan inspired by Madama Butterfly. His wife, an actress named Lucy Dell (MacLaine), has been the leading lady in all of his greatest films, and she is more famous. He feels that she overshadows him and he would like to achieve success independent of her. On a flatbed lorry driven in the streets of London, a motor car is under a grey cover with the initials RR. The Rolls Royce is first purchased by Charles, Marquess of Frinton (Rex Harrison) as a 10th wedding anniversary present for his French wife, Eloise (Jeanne Moreau). Frinton is Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign Office. The marquess is a longtime horse owner who has his heart set on winning the Ascot Gold Cup. This year his horse, named 10 June (his wedding anniversary date; also the writer Terence Rattigan's birthday) is the favourite and does indeed win. Lord Frinton is presented the Gold Cup by King George V. However, his elation is blighted when he finds his wife with her lover, his underling John Fane (Edmund Purdom), in the back of the Rolls with the shades drawn. For appearance's sake, Lord Frinton will not divorce his wife, but he returns the car.
