The Medicine Man (1930) is an American comedy film directed by Scott Pembroke, released by Tiffany Pictures, and starring Jack Benny, Betty Bronson and Eva Novak.
The son and daughter of a shopkeeper fall in with a traveling medicine man. This was an early role for Jack Benny. After talking pictures took over the silent film, vaudeville died and Jack Benny and many other comedians went to motion pictures. Even though Benny was a comedian, in the movie he did not do any jokes at all. The film was adapted from a play by Elliot Lester.
A print is preserved in the Library of Congress.
Synopsis
Mamie Goltz est forcée de travailler pour son père tyrannique dans son magasin. Elle tombe amoureuse du Docteur John Harvey, un guérisseur itinérant, alors que son père a prévu de la marier à Peter, un jeune veuf. Quand Harvey invite Mamie à une démonstration de ses cosmétiques, son père donne une raclée à la jeune femme. Malgré la punition, Mamie échappe à son père pour rejoindre Harvey, qui réalise qu'elle l'aime. Harvey est obligé de quitter la ville lorsque ses assistants gagnent une partie de poker, mais il réussit à épouser Mamie avant que Goltz puisse obtenir une licence de mariage pour Peter. Gus, un employé, tente de dissuader Goltz de les poursuivre et Goltz est tué dans la lutte qui s'en suit.Actors

Before the 1939 invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany, the stars of a theater company in Warsaw are the "ham" Josef Tura (Jack Benny) and his beautiful wife, Maria (Carole Lombard). As part of the company's rehearsal of a play satirizing the Nazis, one of the actors, Bronski (Tom Dugan), takes to the street to prove that he looks like Hitler in his costume and makeup. People gawk at the appearance of the Nazi dictator in Warsaw, until a young girl asks for the autograph of "Mr. Bronski."

En Chine, une jeune femme du nom de Ming Toy, est proche d'être achetée aux enchères comme esclave quand Billy Benson, un jeune et élégant américain, surenchérit et la sauve. Il l’emmène aux États-Unis à San Francisco où elle est remarquée par Charlie Yong, le roi de Chinatown qui souhaite prendre Ming Toy pour femme. Mais ses parents, horrifiés à la pensée de voir leur fils épouser une chinoise, la rejettent. Crainte vite effacée quand elle leur explique qu'elle est une femme blanche, qu'elle a été enlevée, enfant, par un couple de missionnaires qu'ils l'ont élevée en Chine, expliquant alors sa proximité avec la culture et les mœurs chinoises, ayant été imprégnée par celles-ci. Les parents consentent enfin à bénir leur union.

Manhattanite Connie Fuller (Ann Sheridan) secretly acquires a dilapidated house in rural Bucks County, Pennsylvania, without her husband Bill's (Jack Benny) knowledge. The couple were forced out of their New York City apartment after their dog damaged the carpets. The house Connie buys is believed to have served as George Washington's temporary home during the Revolutionary War. Connie takes Bill on a tour of the countryside including the house, hoping that Bill will fall in love with it. Her plan to surprise him with the news that they own the house is frustrated when he announces that he hates it. Bill only sees the poor condition of the house, and its poor location for commuting into the city. Having nowhere else to live, they move into the house anyway. Connie's sister Madge (Joyce Reynolds) moves with them. They hire Mr. Kimber (Percy Kilbride) to help with the renovations. They uncover evidence that it was not Washington who had slept there, but Benedict Arnold. Connie's spoiled nephew Raymond (Douglas Croft) also moves in during the summer. Connie's wealthy uncle Stanley (Charles Coburn) plans to visit also.

Richard Clarke is a lawyer with his own legal practice in Pottsville, New York. His black paralegal assistant continuously claims that Clarke is far too nice a man to be a profitable businessman, since he always fails to demand payment from his poor clients and never take on those he doesn't believe are innocent. In 1593 London, William Shakespeare is a sometime player in the Lord Chamberlain's Men and poor playwright for Philip Henslowe, owner of The Rose Theatre. Shakespeare is working on a new comedy, Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate's Daughter. Suffering from writer's block, he has barely begun the play, but starts auditioning players. Viola de Lesseps, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who has seen Shakespeare's plays at court, disguises herself as "Thomas Kent" to audition, then runs away. Shakespeare pursues Kent to Viola's house and leaves a note with the nurse, asking Thomas Kent to begin rehearsals at the Rose. He sneaks into the house with the minstrels playing that night at the ball, where her parents are arranging her betrothal to Lord Wessex, an impoverished aristocrat. While dancing with Viola, Shakespeare is struck speechless, and after being forcibly ejected by Wessex, uses Thomas Kent as a go-between to woo her. Wessex also asks Will's name, to which he replies that he is Christopher Marlowe.

Cameron James, a new student at Padua High School in the Seattle area, becomes instantly smitten with popular sophomore Bianca Stratford.
