The film begins with the introduction of Bharata Natyam since its inception. It also explains the various hand gestures, known as Mudra and Bala demonstrates one of them, "Mayura Mudra" ("Peacock Mudra"). Narrated by Satyajit Ray, the film describes Bala's lineage and her debut performance in 1925, at the age of seven, at Kancheepuram at the Kamakshi Amman Temple. A noted Sanskrit scholar and musicologist explains Bala's dancing style and an Indian dancer, Uday Shankar mentions about his association with Bala.

Victorio est un vieux musicien-marionnettiste perturbé par une expérience personnelle malheureuse. Aussi, ne cesse-t-il de commettre maladresse sur maladresse. Enfin, le voila qui s'adresse, dans sa loge, à un portrait de jeune femme comme s'il s'agissait d'un être vivant. En dépit d'une réelle empathie, le directeur de la troupe choisit de s'en séparer. Il le maintient néanmoins comme veilleur de nuit. Un soir, justement, alors que le spectacle est terminé et le théâtre vidé, Victorio surprend un jeune homme en train de jouer du piano in petto. Charmé, le vieil homme le prend en amitié et se dispose à lui enseigner son art. Quelque temps plus tard, Victorio découvre une photo de la nouvelle poupée-vedette : elle ressemble au portrait de l'adolescente qu'il chérit avec tant d'émotion. Indigné, il pénètre sans ménagement dans l'atelier du sculpteur et dérobe le modèle qui a été utilisé pour créer la marionnette. "Nous partirons loin, là où personne ne se souviendra de nos crimes", marmonne-t-il.

Marie (Nilsson) is a successful but emotionally distant prima ballerina in her late twenties. During a problem-filled dress rehearsal day for a production of the ballet Swan Lake she is unexpectedly sent the diary of her first love; a college-boy called Henrik (Malmsten) whom she met and fell in love with while visiting her Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Erland's house on a summer vacation thirteen years before. With the cancellation of the dress rehearsal until the evening Marie takes a boat across to the island where she conducted her relationship with Henrik and remembers their playful and carefree relationship.

Classical dance guru Mangal stumbles on a dance performance in a lavish haveli by Neela. He orders his talented son Girdhar to demonstrate to the audience the true method of classical dance. Entranced by Girdhar's skill, Neela begs Mangal to admit her as a pupil. He finally agrees on two conditions: she must devote her life to art and she must partner Girdhar in the Tandav portion of an upcoming dance competition. As the two practice together, she begins to fall in love with Girdhar. Manilal, a wealthy and jealous man who hopes to have Neera for himself, warns Mangal that the two are falling in love, but he ignores him. When Mangal goes away for some time to buy new costumes for the pair, they confess their love to each other and neglect their dancing in favor of idyllic walks and boat rides. Mangal returns and discovers that the two are in love. Enraged that Girdhar's dancing has suffered and believing that he will now never win the title of Bharat Natarajan, he renounces his son and resolves to leave him. Dismayed that she has endangered Girdhar's career, Neela pretends that she has betrayed him with Manilal and he returns to his father and his art. The devastated Neela tries to drown herself in the river, but is rescued by a kindly sadhu. She decides to follow the example of the minstrel Meerabai and devotes her life to Krishna, but is alarmed when Girdhar appears declaring that he can not forget her. She pretends not to know him and he is enraged; his father takes him away. She becomes ill and the sadhu and her servant Bindiya take her to the temple where the dance competition is being held. Hoping to sabotage his chances, Manilal has bribed Girdhar's new partner to drop out of the competition. Neela takes her place in the Tandav dance and Mangal realizes that she spurned Girdhar to help him win the competition. He then convinces his son to give her a second chance. With the help of Neela, Girdhar wins the competition and Mangal gives the couple his blessing to marry.

"Sikkal" Shanmugasundaram (Sundaram) (Sivaji Ganesan) is a devoted Nadaswaram player, but is short-tempered and sensitive. He meets Mohanambal (Mohana) (Padmini), a Bharatnatyam dancer, and they fall in love with each other. Sundaram's ego prevents him from developing his relationship with Mohanambal, who asks him to play a Thillana on his Nadaswaram while she dances. Mohanambal's mother Vadivambal (C. K. Saraswathi), an influential and mercenary woman, wants her daughter to marry a wealthy man so that she can settle down in life properly. Blinded by love, she disobeys her mother, creating a rift between them. Unaware of her feelings, Sundaram decides to leave the country along with Karuppayi (Manorama), a folk dancer whom he considers to be his sister. Mohana calls him a coward and challenges him to stay, which he readily accepts. In a temple, Sundaram plays the Thillana and Mohana dances. Sundaram, impressed with Mohana's performance, crowns her the title "Thillana Mohanambal". Suddenly Nagalingam (E. R. Sahadevan), a landlord who wanted to marry Mohana, turns up to stab Sundaram with a poisoned knife out of jealousy. He came to the temple to kill Mohana.

In order to write an article on how cheerleading demeans women, titled The Swinging Cheerleaders, giving the movie its name, a reporter for a college newspaper infiltrates the cheerleading squad. While doing so, she uncovers unscrupulous dealings; the coach and dean are in cahoots in rigging football games to favor betting spreads the statistics professor, who is also the bookie, arranges. Later the statistics professor turns against the coach and dean as they turn against their star quarterback who they want to convince to throw the game for a big payoff. But when confronted, the quarterback refuses on principle and is arrested by University Police who plant a joint on him as they carry out the deans ultimatum. The movie endorses defiance of authority, and questions love and virginity.

The film is divided into four episodes. In the first Paolo Villaggio plays the role of a sailor from Genoa who learns from his doctor that he will soon become a woman. He begins to make plans and to daydream of what it will be like to be a woman. In the second episode Adriano Celentano is a former dancer in Emilia Romagna who now trains a woman for boxing fights. When he meets a beautiful emilian girl who is enrolling in a dance competition where a large sum of money will be awarded to the winners, Adriano does not miss the opportunity. He first tries to kill the boxer woman he works with, called "King Kong" and then leaves to go dancing with the girl, winning one turn after another. But as the couple wins the first prize Adriano is arrested by the police. In the third episode Renato Pozzetto plays the role of a poor mason from Milan who bets with some friends that he will be able to seduce the wife of his boss. Renato will succeed but will pay the consequences. In the last episode Alberto Sordi plays the role of hick Roman Nando Moriconi (same character of the film Un americano a Roma by Steno - 1954), this time he works as a body guard of a prominent Italian financier who has been the victim of many attempts to kidnap him .

The story begins with a wealthy man selling all his estate in Africa, converting it to diamonds. He carries them in a belt. He suffers a heart attack in washroom and requests a passerby to deliver the diamonds to his son, Rajesh (Rishi Kapoor). The man is chased by goons who are after the diamonds. He hides them in a bicycle toolbox. The bicycle belongs to Sanjay Kumar (Tariq Khan), who is completely unaware that his bicycle has 25 Crore Rupees worth of diamonds hidden in its toolbox. Saudagar Singh (Amjad Khan) is after the diamonds and according to his plans he and his partner Ranbir Kumar Dana set a trap for Rajesh telling a false story to him. The whole plot is pretty speedy after that with Rajesh pretending as Manjeet Kumar Dana is to fall in love with Kajal (Kajal Kiran) who is actually in love with her childhood love, Sanjay. There are a series of meetings between the two.A few years ago when mother-less Kajal's father Kishorilal was in deep financial crisis, Sanjay's father gave shelter to Kajal's father, who has now become filthy rich. The promise of getting Sanjay and Kajol married is forgotten when Kishorilal Kajal's father insults them and forgets the promise that was made years prior. To unfold the plot, Sanjay becomes Manjeet's manager. Saudagar Singh (Amjad Khan) uses Manjeet to get the diamonds himself for the climax.
