Il est une ancienne gloire du glam rock.

En tant que producteur de Metallica de 1990 à 2006, il a participé à l'enregistrement de l'album Metallica (régulièrement appelé Black Album) jusqu'à l'album St. Anger (Il endossera le rôle de bassiste lors de l'enregistrement de cet album à la suite du départ de Jason Newsted en 2001).

Il a aussi produit des albums pour Simple plan, Mötley Crüe (Dr. Feelgood), American Hi-Fi, Bon Jovi, Lostprophets, The Cult, The Offspring et bien d'autres groupes de rock.

Metallica is forced to examine their nature and their very existence as bassist Jason Newsted quits the band and frontman James Hetfield abruptly leaves the group to enter a rehabilitation facility due to alcohol abuse.
