A couple, Adam (Hurt) and Mary (Rossellini), are both heading into their sixties, but react to this differently. A retired teacher, Mary begins to make adjustments to their home to make it more practical for their age. Adam is defensive to any changes and fiercely defends his progression as an architect. They live in London, next door to Mary's mother, Nora who raised her daughter in Italy. Mary worries about an incident of memory loss and her doctor prescribes her to keep active. Adam, insulted by an offer to design a retirement home, instead turns his attention to the proposal of a young associate, Maya (Dobroshi) to participate in a competition to design a new museum. Chimo (played by Mohammed Khouas) is a nineteen-year-old self-described loser who lives in an Arab ghetto with his mother in post-9/11 Marseille. Unemployed, he turns down an opportunity to study (free of charge) at a writers' school for teenagers in Paris despite showing real promise as a writer. Instead, he wastes his day hanging around with other unemployed and aimless "losers". He falls for Lila (Vahina Giocante), a beautiful blonde sixteen-year-old who just moved into the neighborhood with her eccentric and sexually abusive aunt. The film begins with clips that track a telephone call between London and Geneva, where a university student and part-time model, Valentine Dussaut (Irène Jacob), is talking to her emotionally infantile and possessive boyfriend. During her work as a model she poses for a chewing-gum campaign and during the photo shoot the photographer asks her to look very sad. While walking back home Auguste, a neighbour of Valentine's, drops a set of books, notices that a particular chapter of the Criminal Code was open at random, and concentrates on that passage. While driving back to her apartment Valentine is distracted while adjusting the radio and accidentally runs over a dog. She tracks down the owner, a reclusive retired judge, Joseph Kern (Jean-Louis Trintignant). He seems unconcerned by the accident or the injuries sustained by Rita, his dog. Valentine takes Rita to a veterinarian, where she learns that Rita is pregnant. Valentine takes the dog home.
