Terence Fisher (23 February 1904 – 18 June 1980) was a film director who worked for Hammer Films. He was born in Maida Vale, a district of London, England.

Biography

Il est avant tout célèbre pour avoir réalisé un certain nombre de films pour la firme britannique Hammer Film Productions, tels que Frankenstein s'est échappé, Le Cauchemar de Dracula, qui ont renouvelé les vieux mythes du fantastique avec une mise en scène jouant sur les couleurs, des décors réalistes, et une ambiance gothique. Sa version de Dracula est particulièrement importante pour l'esthétique des films de vampires et du cinéma fantastique en général : c'est la première fois que l'on voit les canines proéminentes de Dracula, du sang à l'écran, et une tension érotique inédite. Il a aussi révélé les deux acteurs Peter Cushing et Christopher Lee.

Son dernier film sera Frankenstein et le monstre de l'enfer (réalisé pour la Hammer Film Productions). Celui-ci signera la fin d'un cinéma fantastique gothique sur le point de s'éteindre, en étant à la fois le dernier chef-d'œuvre de la firme et le dernier épisode d'une saga de cinq films (les cinq Frankenstein réalisés par Fisher, avec Peter Cushing, entre 1957 et 1974).

Set in London and the south of England in 1929, the story finds Nicholas, Duc de Richleau, investigating the strange actions of the son of a friend, Simon Aron, who has a house replete with strange markings and a pentagram. After a mysterious gas attack which kills off most of the Earth's population, a few survivors gather at a country inn to figure out a plan for survival. However, the gas attack is only the first step in an alien invasion, in which groups of killer robots stalk the streets, able to kill anyone with the a mere touch of their hands. The group's members find additional weaponry in a nearby drill hall, but the robots continue their campaign of terror, which only increases when their victims rise from the dead as zombies, eager to kill anyone who might try to stop them. Yet despite frictions within the group -- and the birth of a baby, which further complicates matters -- most of the members survive. After discovering that the robots are being controlled from a local transmitting tower, the survivors blow it up and head to a nearby airport, where they commandeer a plane and fly towards an unknown destination, hoping additional survivors see their plane and join them.

The year is 1910. In the rural German village of Vandorf, seven murders have been committed within the past five years, each victim having been petrified into a stone figure. Rather than investigate it, the local authorities dismiss the murders for fear of a local legend having come true. When a local girl becomes the latest victim and her suicidal lover made the scapegoat, the father of the condemned man decides to investigate and discovers that the cause of the petrifying deaths is a phantom. The film opens in Victorian London on a December night in 1900. The first night of the season at the London Opera House finds the opening of a new opera by Lord Ambrose D'Arcy (Michael Gough), a wealthy and pompous man, who is annoyed and scornful when the opera manager Lattimer (Thorley Walters) informs him the theatre has not been completely sold out. No one will sit in a certain box because it is haunted. Backstage, despite the soothing efforts of the opera's producer, Harry Hunter (Edward de Souza), everyone, including the show's star, Maria, is nervous and upset as if a sinister force was at work. The climax comes during Maria's first aria, when a side of the scenery rips apart to reveal the body of a hanged stage hand. In a panic, the curtain is rung down, and Maria refuses to sing again.

The story is set in 18th Century Spain. A beggar is imprisoned by a cruel marques after making inappropriate remarks at the nobleman's wedding.
