Elton John fait irruption à une réunion des alcooliques anonymes, habillé avec un costume de scène orange extravagant. Quelques années plus tard, il rencontre le parolier Bernie Taupin. Ce dernier écrit les paroles, Elton les met ensuite en musique. La collaboration dure des années. Alors qu'Elton cache son homosexualité, il vit cependant une liaison compliquée avec son manager John Reid et fait un « faux mariage » avec Renate Blauel. Il va mettre quelques années à avouer son orientation sexuelle à ses proches.
