Synopsis
Dans un monde futur, proche du totalitarisme, où des implants bioniques avancés signifient que toutes les personnes sont soumises à un flot visuel incessant de données qu'ils nomment « l'œil de l'esprit », la vie privée et l'anonymat comme nous les connaissons ont totalement disparu. Avec les informations personnelles de tout un chacun en affichage public, la vie de chaque personne étant enregistrée jusqu'à la milliseconde, les informations personnelles sont téléchargées sur une vaste grille appelée "l"Ether", une base de données que les forces de l'ordre peuvent consulter et utiliser pour poursuivre les criminels. L'inspecteur Sal Frieland (Clive Owen) est confronté à une série de terribles meurtres qui semblent être liés. La police se trouve dans l'incapacité d'identifier le tueur dont la particularité est de hacker ses victimes au point qu'elle se retrouvent avec le point de vue du tueur qui braque son arme sur elles et appuie sur la gâchette. Il devient vite apparent que ce que les meurtres ont en commun signale une rupture majeure dans le système sur lequel la société est basée. Alors qu'il enquête sur l'affaire, Frieland rencontre une femme (Amanda Seyfried) qui semble n'avoir aucune identité et qui s'avèrera être Anon. Quelque chose qu'il considère initialement comme un petit pépin devient en fait le premier indice démontrant que la sécurité de l '« œil de l'esprit » a été compromise, envoyant Frieland dans une mission où il sert d'appât pour tenter de piéger quelqu'un qui n'existe pas.Actors

In 2169, people are born genetically engineered with a digital clock on their forearm. When they turn 25 years old, they stop aging and their clock begins counting down from one year; when it reaches zero, that person "times out" and dies. Time has become the universal currency; it is used to pay for daily expenses and can be transferred between people or capsules. The country has been divided into "time zones" based on the wealth of the population. The film focuses on two specific zones: Dayton - a poor manufacturing area where people generally have 24 hours or less on their clock at any given time - and New Greenwich - the wealthiest time zone, where people have enough time on their clock to live for centuries.

In 2027, after 18 years of global human infertility, civilization is on the brink of collapse as humanity faces extinction. Four men stand staring one another down before a shootout. In a flashback one of the gunslingers, The Nomad, shows he shot a man in the Badlands named Milton while he is describing a vision of paradise just beyond the dunes. The Nomad loots through Milton's remains before camping for the night. That night the Nomad dreams of the preacher who sent him into the desert to protect a mysterious city, reminding him to make sure the horse is looked after. The Nomad wakes up realizing that the horse is more important to the mission than he is, and that he was never to see his home again. Rather than kill the next desert intruder, The Nomad conspires with him in faking his own death, which causes the horse to head home, tracked and followed by the Nomad. After the deal is struck, the Nomad goes to stop two more intruders entering the badlands. Now knowing his horse is actually an enemy, The Nomad takes a liking to the two strangers, The Entrepreneur and The Sherpa and chooses to stay with them. After a day of travel and a congenial dinner, they fall sleep around the fire. The Nomad again dreams of the preacher and his warnings. When the Nomad wakes up he finds his horse has vanished. Believing the two new strangers are responsible, he attacks them and ties them up for questioning. He finally realizes the culprit must have been the shady stranger from the day before.

Equilibrium is set in 2072 in Libria, a city state established by the survivors of World War III that devastated the world, where a totalitarian government requires all citizens to take daily injections of "Prozium" to suppress emotion and encourage obedience. All emotionally stimulating material has been banned, and "Sense Offenders" – those who fail to take their Prozium – are put to death, as the government claims that the cause of all wars and violence is emotion. Libria is governed by the Tetragrammaton Council, led by "Father", who is seen only on giant video screens throughout the city. At the pinnacle of Librian law enforcement are the Grammaton Clerics, who are trained in the martial art of gun kata. The Clerics frequently raid the "Nether" region outside the city to search for and destroy illegal materials – art, literature, and music – and execute the people hiding them. A resistance movement, known as the "Underground", emerges with the goal of toppling Father and the Tetragrammaton Council.
