Chopping Mall is an American horror/science fiction film produced by Julie Corman and originally released on March 21, 1986 under the title Killbots. Lionsgate released the film twice on DVD: once in 2004 (with special features including a featurette, commentary, still gallery and trailer) and in 2012 as part of an 8-horror film DVD set.

Upon release, the movie did poorly at the box office. It did better when it was re-released as Chopping Mall. The film is based around killer security robots taking over a shopping mall and murdering teenage employees. The term killbot is never actually mentioned during the movie.

Jim Wynorski directed the movie and wrote it with Steve Mitchell. It was filmed mostly at Sherman Oaks Galleria, with occasional set shots (e.g., the paint store). The movie starred Kelli Maroney (who appeared in Night of the Comet and the daytime soap opera Ryan's Hope) and Tony O'Dell (from the TV series Head of the Class). Roger Corman and his wife Julie produced it. Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov share a cameo as their characters from Eating Raoul, Paul and Mary Bland. Chopping Mall also acts as a debut film for Rodney Eastman, who later went on to star in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master.

There are at least two different versions of the movie. The TV cut has some extra footage, like a small homage to Attack of the Crab Monsters, extended scenes of Ferdy and Allison watching TV, some aerial shots, and an extension of one of the Ferdy/Allison scenes. This is one of those rare times when the TV edit has more than a few extra seconds of footage over the theatrical version, but no official source offers this version.

On the DVD commentary tracks, Wynorski and Mitchell discussed many details of making the film, including an injury that the director suffered while helping prepare a stunt sequence, their unfriendly relationship with the Galleria's security chief (and friendly one with the mall's owner), the many beautiful women who were part of the cast, and ways that they dealt with having little time or money and finished their work on time.

Synopsis

Park Plaza Mall has just installed a state-of-the-art security system, which includes security shutters across all exits, and three high-tech security robots, programmed to disable (using tasers and tranquilliser guns) and apprehend would-be thieves.

Teenage computer whiz Kyle Baxter (Ethan Randall) enters, and subsequently cheats in a virtual reality version of laser tag(this was due to losing in a round caused by an uninvited player interfering). The prize is a robotic opponent to compete against in a real-world version of the game. When "Evolver" (the robot, voiced by William H. Macy) is first delivered, it appears to be quite simply a toy, but is revealed that whenever Evolver is defeated, he "evolves" up to the next level of the game, becoming smarter, quicker and harder to beat. Kyle, his friend Zach, Jamie, (a girl he met during the competition and lost because of her,) and his sister, Ali (Nassira Nicola) soon begin the first level of the game with Evolver. The first game (Evolver vs. Kyle, Zach, Jamie, and Ali) passes quickly, and all appears to be fine. Later, because Evolver has recording capabilities, Kyle and Zach send Evolver into the girls locker room at their school. However, Evolver is discovered by the girls there and is pushed into the boys locker room, where he switches to game mode. The only occupant, Dwight, a bully jock, meets Evolver, who takes him as an enemy to defeat.

By 2041, North America has been ravaged by "the great toxic gas scare of 1993": large swaths of land have been turned into inhospitable desert, where bands of raiders called "Centros" attack transports. The former United States have been assimilated into a Western bloc called the North Hemi. The opposing Eastern bloc is known as the Eastern Alliance, and the North Hemi is planning to salvage its economy by manufacturing defense robots called "mini-megs" for the Eastern Alliance. These robots would be smaller offshoots of giant "mega-robots", once ubiquitous in warfare but now reduced to a single specimen, the MRAS-2 (which looks like a mechanized scorpion).

The film opens with two short sequences before the main story line begins, first a prologue, and then a mock television advertisement. In the prologue, a seemingly helpless young woman is pursued by Jason Voorhees, Leatherface, and Freddy Krueger; she is then chased into a cave and reappears a few seconds later with an item from each of the three. She then faces the camera and laughs (showing her fangs) and says, "Amateurs!" The advertisement sequence is for a "mortuary, crematory, cemetery" called "Death City" where a salesman tries selling viewers "new and used coffins", with the help of his assistant Lovely Rita.

Because of the repercussions left from his last adventure, Munchie must appear before a celestial court presided over by Kronus (Angus Scrimm). The tribunal proceeds to blame Munchie for a number of historical calamities, including the sinking of Atlantis, the crash of the Hindenburg, the cataclysm of Vesuvius, the meltdown of Chernobyl. As punishment, he is sentenced to help single mom Linda McClelland (Lesley-Anne Down). Linda's son Chris (Trenton Knight) is the only one who can see Munchie, and Munchie and he become best buddies. Chris is the pitcher of a Little League team, and is being bullied by Brett Carlisle (Corey Mendelsohn), who is his rival in baseball as well as for the attentions of the girl-next-door Jennifer (Natanya Ross). While out of town on a business trip, Linda's boss makes improper advances to her. When she refuses his advances, he fires her. This creates financial hardship on the family. Munchie intervenes in their lives, making it so Chris has a perfect game and impresses Jennifer, and Linda finds a bag of money to prevent eviction.
