Synopsis
À Perth , au milieu des années 1980 , des jeunes femmes disparaissent régulièrement, mais les habitants de la région ne soupçonnent pas que leur disparition est l'œuvre d'un couple de tueurs en série : John et Evelyn White. Ils ramassent des jeunes femmes dans la rue au hasard. Un jour, ils kidnappent Vicky Maloney, une adolescente rebelle de dix-sept ans. Alors que la police pense que l'adolescente s'est enfui de son domicile, Vicky est maltraitée par le couple perturbé. In rural Australia, two men meet for a drug deal and exchange suitcases wordlessly. When the buyer checks the drugs, he discovers that he has been cheated, but an explosive hidden in the suitcase kills him before he can retaliate. The seller puts a suitcase full of cash in his car and speeds down the highway to Neverest to meet a contact. As he recklessly attempts to pass another car, he swerves off the road to avoid a collision and dies. A man involved in the crash, Colin, discovers the suitcase and gives the driver of the oncoming car a ride back to Neverest. There, he meets Frank, a local cop, and Colin discovers that the other driver is Frank's wife, Jina. Colin hands the money over to Frank, who invites Colin to stay overnight while Colin waits for his car to be repaired. When Frank leaves to secure the cash, Jina unsuccessfully attempts to seduce Colin. When Colin notices a bruise on Jina, she claims that Frank beats her, but Colin becomes suspicious when he hears Frank and Jina have rough sex, which she seems to enjoy.

Becky DeMuth et son frère Cal voyagent à San Diego pour que Becky, enceinte de six mois, puisse donner son enfant à l'adoption. Inquiets, Becky et Cal entrent dans le champ mais sont vite séparés et découvrent que la distance qui les sépare change étrangement. De plus en plus paniqués, ils tentent de partir mais sont incapables de retrouver la route. La nuit tombe et Cal tombe sur Tobin, blessé et sale, tenant un corbeau mort, qui lui dit que le champ ne peut pas déplacer les choses mortes, avant d'enterrer le corbeau. Becky rencontre le père de Tobin, Ross, mais ils sont séparés plus tard par le champ. Tobin emmène Cal vers un rocher antique situé dans le champ et l'encourage à le toucher, mais ils sont interrompus par les cris de Becky, attaquée par une figure inconnue.
