It is based on the comedy play with the same name by Aldo De Benedetti, which had previously inspired the film I Don't Know You Anymore directed by Nunzio Malasomma and starred by Vittorio De Sica.

Un château dans une île de Suède. Une curieuse famille : Hugo, un hobereau autocrate ; Eléonore, sa femme ; Agathe, sa sœur, vieille fille attachée aux traditions ; Sébastien, frère d'Eléonore, à qui le lie une affection trouble ; une grand-mère tombée en enfance. Tout ce monde costumé comme au XIXe siècle. Voilà ce que trouve en arrivant le jeune Eric, cousin de Hugo, qui vient profiter de l'hospitalité bien connue de la famille. Très vite, Eléonore lui laisse entendre que ses faveurs s'accordent volontiers. Puis Eric découvre que la première femme de Hugo, Ophélie, devenue folle, vit en recluse dans le château. Eléonore n'est donc pas la femme légitime de Hugo et Eric lui propose de fuir avec lui. Mais de cela, pas question : Eléonore n'a aucune envie de fuir. Hugo, qui a découvert (ou provoqué) la liaison, veut tuer Eric. Agathe et Sébastien partagent son point de vue. Finalement, Eric s'enfuit sur le lac à moitié gelé et tombe d'épuisement aux pieds d'un paysan.

En 1900 à Rome, le pauvre charpentier Francesco voit sa vie prendre un tournant inattendu lorsqu'il est reconnu comme un membre d'une noble famille en déclin. Francesco fait la connaissance du cynique et impitoyable Prince Torquato Terenzi, déçu par la vie et le progrès, et tombe également amoureux de la belle Duchesse Elisa. The Viceroy of a remote 18th century Peruvian town has purchased a magnificent golden coach from Europe. The Viceroy hints of his intention to give the coach to his mistress, the Marquise, but has decided to pay for it with public funds, since he plans to use it to overawe the populace and flatter the local nobility, who enthusiastically look forward to taking turns parading in it. By coincidence, the coach arrives on the same ship that carries an Italian commedia dell'arte troupe composed of men, women and children who perform as singers, actors, acrobats and comics. The troupe is led by Don Antonio, who also portrays the stock character of Pantalone on stage, and features Camilla, who plays the stock role of Columbina.

As summarized in a film publication, Mrs. Belle Johnson (Burke) is a widow and has a married sister Grace Morley (Warrington) who is unhappy and is having an affair with Sir Lionel Heathcote (Gordon). Belle tries to keep them apart to save her sister's reputation. Frank Morley (Hare), a brother of Grace's husband and a previous love of Belle, returns and soon he and Belle are in love again and planning to elope. At the same time Grace is planning on running off with Heathcote, and a note sent to her is found by her husband Jim (Crane). Jim follows his wife Grace to Heathcote's apartment, but Belle gets there ahead of them and pretends that the note was meant for her. Franks hears of this and wants nothing more with Belle. Eventually, Grace decides that she cannot let her sister sacrifice her happiness and tells her husband the truth. Frank goes back with Belle, and Grace says that she is getting a divorce so that she can marry Heathcote.
