François Perrin est un petit journaliste énonçant les nouvelles à l'antenne de RTL. Seul dans la vie, sa seule « distraction » est son voisin de palier qui lui tient la jambe de temps à autre. Mais un soir d'ennui, il décide d'appeler un numéro de téléphone au hasard. Il tombera sur Christine, pharmacienne un peu vieille fille, qui après avoir hésité à raccrocher immédiatement, se prendra au jeu du charmant inconnu à l'autre bout du fil. Après un rendez-vous manqué, il cherchera à la côtoyer en se faisant passer pour un grand reporter, tandis qu'il continuera à lui téléphoner sous les traits d'un grand écrivain, afin de ne pas la décevoir sur sa petite condition. Pendant ce temps, elle devra se dépêtrer de sa vie familiale, mais surtout de celle de ses proches un brin encombrants.

Des difficultés financières vont entraîner le rachat de l'entreprise Castejac de Toulouse par le groupe américain Fielding. Benoît Castejac se rend à Paris pour négocier avec Morrison, le représentant du groupe. Ce dernier charge son directeur des relations publiques, Levêgue, de fournir une call-girl au PDG toulousain : il s'agit de rendre plus agréable son séjour et plus facile la négociation. Benoît rencontre Christine, qu'on lui présente comme la nièce de Levêgue, et en tombe amoureux. De retour à Toulouse, il doit faire face à une grève menée par Bastide, le délégué syndical et l'un des joueurs de l'équipe de rugby animée par Benoît. Lors d'un nouveau séjour à Paris, celui-ci apprend, de Levêgue la vérité. Il fait venir Christine, l'insulte, puis il la supplie de le suivre. Christine se moque de lui. À Toulouse, Françoise Castejac, jalouse, décide de coucher avec un envoyé de Morrison, puis de se séparer de Benoît. Celui-ci est seul, abandonné de tous. Un dernier espoir : Christine.

Susan is a professional flautist in Boston who has been handicapped since childhood and is forced to wear a leg brace to get around. It is the day that Antoine (Jean-Claude Brialy), a Paris advertising man, is to marry the lovely Gisèle (Marie Laforêt) and his best man Julien (Claude Rich), a divorced statistician, tries to talk him out of it with tales of the hard times he had from women, ending in entrapment by his stunning secretary Denise (Catherine Deneuve), a professional virgin. Antoine decides to run for it, taking one of the tickets for the honeymoon in Greece and giving the other to Fernand. On board ship, he falls for the delectable Sandra (Françoise Dorléac), a professional confidence woman, who cleans him out of his money but in the end agrees to marry him. Fernand comes back with an old millionairess, former brothel owner, who drives a Rolls. At the wedding of Antoine and Sandra, Julien falls for a sweet brunette.
