Add to a movie listSummer Holiday is a 1948 American musical film, starring Mickey Rooney and Gloria DeHaven. The picture is based on the play Ah, Wilderness! (1933) by Eugene O'Neill, which had been filmed as under that name by MGM in 1935 with Rooney in a much smaller role. Though completed in October 1946, the film sat on the shelf until 1948.
In addition to Walter Huston, the supporting cast features Frank Morgan as the drunken Uncle Sid, portrayed earlier by Wallace Beery on screen and later by Jackie Gleason on Broadway, as well as Marilyn Maxwell, Agnes Moorehead, Selena Royle and Anne Francis.
Synopsis
Au début du XX siècle, dans une petite ville du Connecticut. Le jeune Richard Miller, qui vit dans un quartier de la classe moyenne avec sa famille, est amoureux de Muriel, sa voisine. Mais le père de cette dernière ne voit pas d'un très bon œil cet amour de jeunesse. En effet, il trouve que le jeune garçon, avec ses idées révolutionnaires, a une très mauvais influence sur sa fille...Actors

The story describes an encounter between a Parisian tailor named Maurice Courtelin (Chevalier) and a family of local aristocrats. After the Battle of Pharsalus where Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) has defeated Pompey, Pompey flees to Egypt, hoping to enlist the support of the young Pharaoh Ptolemy XIII (Richard O'Sullivan) and his sister Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor). Lily une jeune paysanne vient de perdre son père, elle est recueillie par sa tante, Madame Rasmussen, libraire à Berlin, une femme autoritaire, rigide et légèrement portée sur l'alcool. De la fenêtre de sa chambre Lily aperçoit un atelier de sculpteur qui la fascine. Un jour, Richard le sculpteur entre dans la librairie et semble captivé par le corps de Lily, il la persuade de venir poser pour elle. Acceptant après avoir hésité, Lily déjouant la surveillance de sa tante se rend chez Richard qui la convainc de se déshabiller pour prendre la pose. Bientôt une très belle sculpture prend forme et les deux jeunes gens entament une idylle. Survient alors le baron von Merzbach qui est un client de Richard et qui tombe en admiration devant la statue, il demande à être présenté à Lily. Quelque temps plus tard, le baron persuade Richard qu'avec ce dernier, Lily n'aura aucun avenir, alors qu'avec lui, elle aura la reconnaissance, la fortune, le titre…par lâcheté Richard accepte. Le soir alors que Lily s'apprête à se rendre chez Richard, Madame Rasmussen la surprend et la chasse de son domicile. Elle se rend chez Richard, mais celui-ci a disparu, et c'est alors le baron von Merzbach qui l'accueille à sa place en lui apprenant que Richard est parti en voyage. Le baron-ci lui propose le mariage, désorientée et choquée, Lily accepte. Elle fait son éducation dans le grand monde, apprend la musique, le français, la danse mais n'est pas heureuse. Von Prell le palefrenier du baron s'éprend d'elle et lui déclare sa flemme pendant une leçon d'équitation, Lily le rabroue.

Dick Thorpe (Nelson Eddy) is a football star for the Army, and Rosalie (Eleanor Powell), a Vassar student who is also a princess (Princess Rosalie of Romanza) in disguise, watches a football game. They are attracted to each other and agree to meet in her country in Europe. When Dick flies into her country he is greeted as a hero by the King (Frank Morgan) and finds Rosalie. Rosalie is engaged to marry Prince Paul (Tom Rutherford), who actually is in love with Brenda (Ilona Massey); Dick, not knowing of Prince Paul's affections, leaves the country. The King and his family are forced to leave their troubled country, and Dick and Rosalie are finally re-united at West Point.
