William Adamson (Mark Rylance), a brilliant naturalist, has recently returned to Victorian England, staying with the family of his wealthy benefactor, Sir Harold Alabaster (Jeremy Kemp). Sarah Morton, a middle-aged English mystery author, who has written a successful series of novels featuring a single detective, is having writer's block that is impeding her next book. The film focuses on three twenty-somethings in an unconventional love triangle in Paris during the summer of 1972. L'action se situe au Nebraska à la fin du XIX siècle. Amy et Martin Hightower sont un couple de fermiers qui travaillent dur et qui ont quatre enfants. À la suite d'un malaise Amy se rend chez le médecin et comprend que ses jours sont comptés, elle persuade alors son mari de trouver une autre femme pour la remplacer auprès de lui dans les travaux de la ferme. Après plusieurs recherches infructueuses, elle finit par rencontrer Pearl une prostituée, qui l'âge venant n'a plus le succès de ses débuts. La cohabitation ne se fait pas sans mal, mais quand Amy se rend compte qu'elle ne peut plus avoir de relations sexuelles avec son mari, elle pousse celui-ci à coucher avec Pearl, celui-ci commence par refuser avant de se laisser tenter. Lorsqu'Amy semble être guérie, les trois protagonistes mettent au point les règles de ce qui deviendra un ménage à trois. Plus tard Amy fait une rechute et décède. Pearl restera auprès de Martin pour élever les enfants et s'occuper de la ferme.

This movie is about the tawaif Sahibjaan (Meena Kumari), who is born to a courtesan, Nargis (also Meena Kumari). After being spurned by her lover Shahabuddin's (Ashok Kumar) family, Nargis is driven to a graveyard where she gives birth to Sahibjaan secretly. Nargis dies during childbirth and her sister Nawabjaan (Veena)- a brothel madam - brings her up as her own. Unable to break away from the vicious circle, Sahibjaan grows up to be a beautiful and popular dancer/singer. Forest ranger Salim Ahmed Khan (Raaj Kumar), enthralled by her beauty and innocence, eventually convinces her to elope with him, which she does. But trials and tribulations await Sahibjaan as she is recognized by men wherever she goes in the company of Salim. When Salim renames her Pakeezah (pure of heart) and takes her to a cleric to be legally married, she refuses and returns to the brothel. Salim eventually decides to marry someone else and invites Sahibjaan to dance at his wedding; she agrees. During this event, Nawabjaan recognises Shahabuddin and calls him to witness the irony of the situation: It is his own daughter dancing and entertaining his family.
