En avril 1941, pendant l'occupation, en Macédoine, une troupe bulgare d'occupation, commandée par Stepan Raiko, s'installe dans Rodoneri un village de la région de Dráma. Immédiatement, le chef du village, Manolis Devetzis, ancien compagnon d'armes de Pavlos Melas, est arrêté : les Bulgares ont un vieux contentieux à régler avec lui. Il est remplacé à la tête du village par un collaborateur, Grigoris Theofilou. Katerina, sa fille, travaille comme secrétaire des occupants bulgares. Nikos Devetzis, qui avait été amoureux de Katerina, blessé lors de l'attaque allemande est prisonnier dans un hôpital à Athènes. Quand il apprend le sort de son père, il s'évade et rejoint le village avec un de ses amis, le journaliste Vasilis Anthimos. En fait, Katerina aide la résistance dirigée par Nikos, en leur faisant passer des informations avec l'aide du pope. Le groupe de Nikos fait sauter un train bulgare. Stepan Raiko évince Grigoris Theofilou et prend seul la direction du village. Nikos découvre que Katerina est son informatrice. Il retombe amoureux d'elle. À la fin de la guerre, le groupe de Nikos chasse les Bulgares du village. Raiko est tué dans les combats.

Stratis (Dinos Iliopoulos), after many years of laborious work, publishes his treatise on Aspasia's role in the Peloponnesian Wars. A team of American film producers approaches him to get the movie rights, planning to use his scientific work for a historical parody. At first he rejects their offer, but finally life's demands and his debts to his relatives compel him to accept. At the same time he falls in love with his cinematic heroine (Anna Fonsou). In the end after the completion of the shooting of the film, his luck changes and he is able to return to his old ways.

In 1828 Edinburgh, Scotland, Dr. Knox (Peter Cushing) is a highly skilled anatomist who draws large crowds of medical students to his lectures on the human body. Though he is constantly at odds with his stuffy, backwards colleagues, he is highly venerated by his students and believes his duty is to push the medical profession forward. Unfortunately, due to the laws of the time very few cadavers are legally available to the medical profession, necessitating the use of graverobbers or "Resurrection men" to procure additional specimens. The camera pans across a mist-shrouded expanse of water clogged with fallen trees and branches, with a ghostly black-clad figure hovering hazily on the water's surface. "I am the spirit of dark and lonely water: ready to trap the unwary, the showoff, the fool..." intones the voiceover, "...and this is the kind of place you'd expect to find me. But no-one expects to find me here", as the scene switches to a group of children playing on the muddy edge of a murky pool. A boy is teetering on the steep, slippery bank attempting to retrieve a football from the pool with a stick. "But that pool is deep. The boy is showing off...the bank is slippery," says the spirit, approaching from behind as the child slips into the water.
