Diane suffers from chronic nosebleeds. She checks herself in a mirror and transforms into a monster before falling unconscious. Earlier, she walks in the streets trying to borrow a cellphone in order to call her twin sister Karen. Having no luck, she enters a clothing store and asks to use a phone. There, she meets a girl of her age, Jack, who is clearly smitten by Diane. Diane's nose starts bleeding again and Jack gives her a hand. Jack then takes Diane to a night club. When they get there, Diane seems nauseous, having lost a lot of blood from her nose, and she goes to the restroom. This scene is parallel to the beginning of the film because of the mirror. She gains consciousness, meets up with Jack and the girls passionately kiss.

In 1961 London, Jenny Mellor is a 16-year-old schoolgirl preparing for Oxford University when she meets a charming older man driving a Bristol 405, David Goldman, who pursues her romantically. Beyond the Fire tells the story of Sheamy and Katie. Sheamy is a gentle but troubled Irish ex-priest who arrives in London to find his old family friend and mentor Father Brendan. Katie is a warm hearted woman with her own emotional scars. After arriving in London, Sheamy tries to make contact with Father Brendan. As he is not at home when he calls, he contacts the only other person he knows in London, Rory, a distant relative by marriage. Rory is a musician and band member and, after meeting Sheamy at a gig (where Sheamy makes a good first impression on Katie, who manages the band), offers him a bed and introduces him more fully to Katie, his flatmate. There is an immediate and obvious attraction between Sheamy and Katie. The film follows their attempts to form a lasting relationship despite both their pasts continuing to haunt them.

When Bennett Brewer (Aaron Johnson) dies, his family feel like they cannot go on. His mother Grace (Sarandon) and his father Allen (Brosnan) get an unexpected visitor knocking at their door; it turns out to be a young woman called Rose (Mulligan), who is pregnant with Bennett's child. As the story develops Bennett's younger brother Ryan is introduced and he is grieving the fact he did not say a final good bye to his brother. One sees the true relationships of the family as the story comes together, Grace waits at the bed of Jordan Walker, the man driving the truck which collided with Bennett's car in the crash. She is waiting for his wake so she can ask him what her son's final 17 minutes were. After a while, she finds out the truth but is disappointed in what she hears. In the last moments, Bennett was not calling his mother's name, he was calling to Rose asking the other wounded passenger Walker to make sure that she was safe.
