Virginia Cathryn "Gena" Rowlands (born June 19, 1930) is an American film, stage and television actress, best known for her career in the entertainment industry stretching over six decades. The four-time Emmy and two-time Golden Globe winner is best known for her collaborations with her late actor-director husband John Cassavetes in ten films, in two of which, Gloria and A Woman Under the Influence, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress. In August 2015, it was announced Rowlands would be the recipient of an Honorary Academy Award, in recognition of her unique screen performances.

Biography

Rowlands was married to John Cassavetes from April 9, 1954, until his death on February 3, 1989. They met at the American Academy at Carnegie Hall where they were both students. They had three children, all actor-directors: Nick, Alexandra, and Zoe.

Rowlands has stated that she was a big fan of actress Bette Davis whilst growing up. She played the daughter of Bette Davis in Strangers.

Erik, a struggling musician who lives off his family's considerable wealth, clashes with his girlfriend, Anna, over what they know are trivial details in their relationship. Apprehensive after watching news reports of increasing conflict in the Middle East, Anna comes to believe that they should spend more time together, but Erik seems preoccupied with music composition and maintaining friendly relations with his ex-girlfriends. At the same time, Len and Mia, a married couple, experience trouble in their own relationship. Len, a depressed and unemployed writer, struggles to find direction in his life. He confesses to his sister, a nurse named Sarah, that he has taken his wife, Mia, for granted until recently. Mia, an accomplished lawyer, has just successfully represented Andy, a scientist of some renown, from accusations of selling trade secrets to a research facility in the 1970s. Anna, worried about visions that she has had recently of a looming apocalypse that involve a young girl, confides in Rick, Len's best friend, that she fears she may be suffering from schizophrenia.

At the airport Marjane Satrapi (Chiara Mastroianni) is unable to board a plane to Iran. She then takes a seat and smokes. She looks back at her childhood.
