The film takes place in the 1890s, with 2 men, one younger and the other much older, attacking and killing travelers camping in plains of the Wild West. After killing several men at a campsite by slitting their throats open, they steal their valuables and begin burning unneeded books and possessions. However, they desist after hearing a bizarre series of howls in the distance, and make for a nearby valley to avoid any pursuers. While traversing the valley, they come across a burial site, where the older man is attacked and savagely killed by an unseen figure. The younger man fires upon the figure as it charges at him, and the film cuts to black.

He stands out terribly among the upper-class aristocrats – wearing a cheap suit and telling boorish anecdotes. Natalie's relaxed, less rigid personality also does not fit with the rest of the patrons. Dutch also meets Natalie's snobbish, wealthy ex-husband Reed (Christopher McDonald), who tells Natalie that he will have to break his Thanksgiving plans with their son Doyle (Ethan Embry) for an unexpected business trip to London. He also threatens to strip Natalie's custody of Doyle if she gives Reed a hard time. Dutch overhears the conversation and threatens Reed with bodily harm should he hurt Natalie.

The film's main protagonist is the young and eccentric inventor Gunther Schmidt, who (like many others) attempts to flee across the East German borderline to the West using his inventions, but constantly meets with failure. Finally, he constructs a gadget which actually works: a modified Trabant with a motor running on turnip juice, making it ultimately environmental, but which is still capable of attaining a speed of up to 250 kph. But by the time his invention is perfected, East and West Germany are reunited, rendering the Trabbi's use as an escape vehicle obsolete.
