Sous contrat à la Warner Bros. en 1935, June Travis (pseudonyme) débute au cinéma dans Bureau des épaves de Frank Borzage, avec Kay Francis et George Brent, sorti en 1935. Jusqu'en 1938, elle apparaît dans trente autres films américains (majoritairement produits par la Warner). Un de ses films les plus connus de cette période est Brumes d'Howard Hawks (1936, avec Pat O'Brien et James Cagney).Puis elle se retire quasiment, se consacrant à sa famille et ne revenant à l'écran que pour deux autres films, La Star de Stuart Heisler (1952, avec Bette Davis et Sterling Hayden), et enfin Monster A Go-Go d'Herschell Gordon Lewis et Bill Rebane (1965).

The plot concerns an American astronaut, Frank Douglas, who mysteriously disappears from his spacecraft as it parachutes to Earth. The vanished astronaut is apparently replaced by or turned into a large, radioactive humanoid monster. A team of scientists and military men attempt to capture the monster – and at one point succeed, only to have him escape again. Neither the capture nor the escape are ever shown, and are simply mentioned by the narrator.

Oscar Award winning star Margaret "Maggie" Elliot (Bette Davis) is a bankrupt actress unwilling to accept her new non-wealthy reality. She is in denial, and confident she can build herself up again and somehow fix her career. After she gets another big deception striving to get that last one good role, she gets drunk, is arrested for DUI, and spends a night in jail. She is bailed out by Jim Johannsen (Sterling Hayden), a young former actor whom she helped in the past. Jim loves her and, helped by Margaret’s daughter Gretchen (Natalie Wood), tries to make Margaret see that her big screen days as a famous actress are already over. She manages to get a screen test for a role in a film she’d always wanted to play. She is offered a screen test for a supporting role which she accepts, trusting that if she plays that character as a sexy young woman she might be able to get the best part, but it does not work out.

Ellory Bugs has offered a huge donation to his old alma mater, Taylor Tech, which is to be paid only if his son, Jimmie "Doodle" Bugs, becomes a football hero.
