Lloyd Benedict Nolan (August 11, 1902 – September 27, 1985) was an American film and television actor.
Nolan served in the United States Merchant Marine before joining the Dennis Players theatrical troupe in Cape Cod. He began his career on stage and was subsequently lured to Hollywood, where he played mainly doctors, private detectives, and policemen in many film roles. He attended Santa Clara Preparatory School and Stanford University, flunking out of Stanford as a freshman "because I never got around to attending any other class but dramatics."
He was a brother in the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Sigma Rho chapter).

Nolan was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Margaret and James Nolan, who was a shoe manufacturer. His parents disapproved of his choice of a career in acting, preferring that he join his father's shoe business, "one of the most solvent commercial firms in San Francisco."Nolan served in the United States Merchant Marine before joining the Dennis Players theatrical troupe in Cape Cod. He began his career on stage and was subsequently lured to Hollywood, where he played mainly doctors, private detectives, and policemen in many film roles. He attended Santa Clara Preparatory School and Stanford University, flunking out of Stanford as a freshman "because I never got around to attending any other class but dramatics."
He was a brother in the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Sigma Rho chapter).

Chicago is paralyzed by a snowstorm affecting Lincoln International Airport. A Trans Global Airlines (TGA) Boeing 707 flight crew misjudge their turn off of Runway 29 on to the taxiway, becoming stuck in the snow and closing Runway 29, forcing airport manager Mel Bakersfield (Burt Lancaster) to work overtime. This causes tension with his wife, Cindy (Dana Wynter). Divorce is looming as he nurtures a closer relationship with a co-worker, TGA customer relations agent Tanya Livingston (Jean Seberg). Bakersfield's brother-in-law, Vernon Demarest (Dean Martin), is a TGA captain scheduled to be the checkride captain for TGA to evaluate Captain Anson Harris (Barry Nelson) during TGA's Flight 2 to Rome. Flight 2 is aboard TGA's flagship service craft, a Boeing 707 known as The Golden Argosy. Although Demarest is married to Bakersfield's sister, Sarah (Barbara Hale), he is secretly having an affair with Gwen Meighen (Jacqueline Bisset), chief stewardess on Flight 2, who informs him before the flight that she is pregnant with his child.

Le détective privé, Mike Hammer est devenu alcoolique à la suite de la disparition de Valda, sa secrétaire, assistante et maîtresse. Un agent fédéral sur le point de mourir à la suite d'une blessure par balle, confie à la police qu'il ne livrera des informations sur son tueur qu'à Mark Hammer et à personne d'autre. La police « ramasse » Hammer dans la rue et après l'avoir passé à tabac et lui apprend que la balle qui a mortellement blessé le fédéral est la même que celle qui a abattu un sénateur influent l'an passé. On le conduit près du mourant, celui-ci donne le nom de code du tueur "le dragon" et lui indique que des précisions complémentaires sont disponibles dans une enveloppe à son nom à un kiosque à journaux où il a ses habitudes. Hammer comprend alors que la résolution de l'affaire peut l'aider à retrouver Valda puisqu'avant qu'elle ne disparaisse elle était à une réception chez le sénateur le soir où il a été abattu. Hammer aura du mal à remonter la filière d'autant que le marchand de journaux qu'il devait contacter est retrouvé assassiné et que la police voit d'un très mauvais œil Hammer empiéter sur ses prérogatives.
