Biography
She was the first caller to Jean Shepherd's late-night radio program on WOR. She became a regular guest, known to listeners as "The Caller." They appeared together in Shepherd's off-Broadway play Look Charlie in 1959, and married in 1960. They divorced seven years later. She never remarried or had children.Her last public appearance was at the 2007 Twilight Zone Convention, in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, in August 2007.

Martha (Maren Jensen) and Jim Schmidt (Douglas Barr) live on an isolated farm named 'Our Blessing', where most of its population are "Hittites", an austere religious community who according to one of the characters "make the Amish look like swingers". Jim was a Hittite, but left the community when he got married. Jim tells a neighbor, Louisa Stohler (Lois Nettleton), who is the mother of Faith (Lisa Hartman) that his wife, Martha is pregnant and that Louisa's services as a mid-wife will soon be needed by them. Louisa and Faith are not part of the Hittite community, either. In fact, they do not like them due in part to the constant harassment of Faith by William, who chases her and calls her, and all "outsides", Incubus. That night, Jim searches in the barn after hearing strange noises from inside, but is murdered when a mysterious figure runs him over with his tractor. This is seen as a mechanical accident.

Passengers on a plane headed from the Midwest to the West Coast (Winnipeg to Vancouver in the book; Minneapolis to Seattle in the film) get quite ill after eating the chicken pot pie entree. Both pilots also ate the chicken. The eleven-year-old Deirdre (Jodie Foster) suffers from an incurable heart condition. A nun returning from a sabbatical is met at a bus station by two of her colleagues. En route to their convent their car breaks down on a desert road and they decide to flag down a passing motorist. Meanwhile 2 escaped convicts have abducted a local businessman's niece with a view to collecting a ransom, only to have the woman fall on her head and die while attempting to flee the abandoned house they are holed up in. Larry, ( Majors) the kidnapper under whose watch the victim died, passes the nuns in their disabled Plymouth Valiant and decides to stop. The nuns mistake him for a helpful motorist and he tows them with his Volkswagen Type II to his hideout (in the opposite direction from Victorville where repair facilities would be accessible). The nuns soon learn their fate and are held hostage in a locked room with boards nailed over the windows. The kidnappers devise a plan to get the ransom money from the rich uncle (who is unaware his niece is dead) by having one of the nuns pose as the dead girl. Larry orders Eddie ( Conrad) to take Sister Ellen ( Nettleton) to a wig shop and to a phone booth that she might call her convent and give false information to explain their not showing up. Eddie is something of an unwitting party, not wishing to commit further crimes and at one point directs the hostages to hide and tells Larry they escaped earlier. Eventually the captives are discovered hiding in a closet by Larry after which a commotion occurs and he is killed by his own gun. Eddie feels forced to take Sister Ellen hostage and attempts to flee by stealing a light aircraft but before he get away there is a climactic scene on the runway.
