Yuen Woo-ping (袁和平 en chinois, Yuán Hépíng en hànyǔ pīnyīn) est un réalisateur, chorégraphe d'action, producteur et acteur hongkongais, né en 1945 à Canton en Chine.
Avec la trilogie Tiger Cage, il introduit les arts martiaux dans le polar urbain. Ces films permettent de découvrir Donnie Yen qui deviendra une star à Hong Kong par la suite.
En 1993, il réalise un sommet du film d'arts martiaux avec Tai-Chi Master. Ce film mettant en vedette Jet Li met en valeur la virtuosité des combattants ainsi que la philosophie du Tai Chi.
Depuis la fin des années 1990, il a cessé de réaliser pour se consacrer à la chorégraphie des scènes de combat dans de nombreux films : Fist of Legend, Matrix, Tigre et Dragon, Kill Bill, Crazy Kung Fu ...
En 2010, il réalise le film de kung-fu True Legend.

Biography
Yuen Woo-ping est le fils de l'acteur Yuen Siu-tien. En 1978, il réalise son premier long métrage Le Chinois se déchaîne avec Jackie Chan. Comme tous ses premiers films, ce film est une comédie kung fu. Le Maître chinois, Le Héros magnifique et Tigre blanc sont des films qui mettent en scène le héros chinois Wong Fei-hung. Sorti en 1982, Miracle Fighters est une recherche particulièrement poussée de l'application des arts martiaux au cinéma fantastique.Avec la trilogie Tiger Cage, il introduit les arts martiaux dans le polar urbain. Ces films permettent de découvrir Donnie Yen qui deviendra une star à Hong Kong par la suite.

Tiger Chen [(Tiger Chen Linhu)] is the sole student of his elderly master's Ling Kong Tai Chi style. While Tiger excels in the physical aspects of his training, Master Yang struggles to instill in Tiger the philosophical aspects, and fears for his character. Tiger harbors a determined ambition to prove the martial effectiveness of the style, as he competes in the local Wulin (武林) contest. In the meantime, HKPD officer Sun-Jing Shi (Karen Mok) has been leading an investigation into Security System Alliance (SSA), a private security firm owned by the mysterious Donaka Mark (Keanu Reeves). Suspected of hosting an illegal fighting operation, Sun-Jing turns one of Donaka's fighters into a mole, but he is discovered and personally killed by Donaka. Despite the setbacks, Sun-Jing wants to continue investigating, but without any evidence Superintendent Wong [(Simon Yam)] has the case closed. Believing the evidence would eventually come through, Sun-Jing secretly continues investigating Donaka and things change with Tiger's involvement.

The story takes place in Hong Kong in a conflict between worlds of Humans and "Rapters" ("Reptoids" in some dubbed versions) before the handover. A special police unit in the city are investigating a mysterious drug named "Happiness". Taki, one of the policemen, meets his old lover Windy, who is a rapter and now a mistress of a powerful old rapter named Daishu. Taki and other special police members track down and fight Daishu, but later find that he hoped to coexist with humans. The son of Daishu, Shudo, is the mastermind. In the end Shudo is defeated, but Daishu and Taki's friends die, too. Windy leaves alone.

Restaurant waiter Sing (Stephen Chow) has always been obsessed with manhuas featuring triads and hoping to be part of them. Following the death of a triad leader, there is conflict within the Hong Kong organised crime syndicate as various possible leaders vie for power. David Chiang attempts to bring the traitor in the midst of his own group to justice following a taped conversation of traitor admitting his crimes, but who cannot be found, while Danny Lee, the elected leader of the triad has his family attacked as he fights unknown enemies to bring the organisation back under control. Their actions are hindered by Chow Sing Chi who is attempting to build up anger between the two completing triads of Hong Kong. The film is brought to a bloody conclusion as the traitor leader of the group storms the triad safe house in a desperate attempt to gain control over the group, but is met by heavy resistance.
