The story evolves from a spat which Milholland has with his fiancée, Alice Gardner. While imbibing too freely in a foolish effort to assuage the pangs besetting him, he decides to sail for Europe, but he lands at Coney Island via the sight-seeing-car route, and in the course of zig-zag events he meets the Princess, an Oriental dancer, in a music hall. He becomes infatuated with her, and for the first time in his young pampered life he earns ten dollars playing a piano while she does her act on the stage. Eventually he takes the Princess to the home of his wealthy aunt, Mrs. King. Their betrothal is announced at a dinner on which occasion the Princess worries Pete and the many guests by her frequent breaches of etiquette. The next day Pete meets his former fiancée and quickly tells her that his love for the Princess is only a passing fancy. When the latter learns of this she returns to her father's Coney Island resort. There she realizes the folly of essaying to hold the fealty of a man abover her caste, and she cheerfully sets about to be happy with her lot. In the meantime a reconciliation reinstates Pete in the realm of bliss with his first love.

Through mistaken identity, a rich contractor's son is impressed into the labor force building his own father's dam at Silver Peak. When construction of a dam in Silver Peak, Colorado threatens their land, rancher Crofton (William MacDonald) and his daughter Enid (Helen Weir) confront New York contractor James Dukane, Sr. (William T. Carleton). Dukane sends his son James "Jimmy" Dukane, Jr. (John Barrymore) to manage construction and to deal with the dam's impact on the locals, hoping that the task will help his son mature. However, en route to the construction site, Jimmy is waylaid by a vagabond, and his clothing and identification are stolen. Dressed in the tramp's clothes, Jimmy finally meets with the construction foreman Corbetson (Stewart Baird), who skoffs at his claimed identity and instead puts him to work with a pick and shovel. During his labors, Jimmy learns that Corbetson has been using sub-par materials and embezzling monies from Dukane Sr, and that to hide his crime, Corbetson is planning to blow up the dam.

A man gives aid to another man on the condition that he can marry the man's daughter. The daughter refuses and goes to a lumber camp with her father. At the lumber camp she marries a man named James Murry. The first man finds her and convinces her husband that she only married him for the money. This causes problems in their relationship. The man ends up getting her sister pregnant too and when he refuses to marry her, the sister kills him. To protect her sister the woman claims to have done it. The lumber camp man realizes his wife was only sacrificing herself for her sister, and that effort helps to reunite the couple.

High-born but poor Dulcie Larondie is working as a bar maid in the Skagg Inn when she accepts a marriage proposal from the wealthy Sir Brice Skene, rejecting in the process the love of David Remon, an impoverished astronomer. Sir Brice turns out to be a drunk, a gambler and a wife-beater, who loses his fortune four years into the marriage. Remon wins her back in a game of cards with Skene, who is shortly afterwards murdered by a blackmailing acquaintance. This leaves Dulcie free to marry David.
