Kavithalayaa Productions is a Tamil cinema film production company and film distribution company founded by film director, screenwriter and producer K. Balachander. Located in Kodambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it has released several acclaimed Tamil language features of the Chennai film Industry, including Sindhu Bhairavi, Mani Ratnam's Roja and K. S. Ravikumar's commercially successful film Muthu. It has also produced films in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam.

Balachander's wife Rajam Balachander and his daughter Pushpa Kandaswamy also produce for the banner.

A kind-hearted Zamindar (Rajinikanth) lived with his sister-in-law and cousin Rajasekhar (Raghuvaran), helping people incessantly. His sister-in-law has a son, to whom the Zamindar bequeaths a major portion of his property. At this juncture, a new baby is born to the Zamindar. His wife dies soon after. Brother Rajasekhar cheats the Zamindar as he fears that his son's property might be taken back and given to the Zamindar's own son. When the cheating comes to light, the Zamindar hands over all his property and his baby to his sister-in-law and brother and goes to the Himalayas, making his sister-in-law promise him that the baby should be brought up as a servant, not as a Zamindar. This baby is named Muthu (also Rajinikanth).

Azhagappan (Mammootty) a successful hotelier and father of four small children has lost his wife (whose face is not shown in the photo) in an accident. College student Swapna (Madhoo) play pranks on him and also falls in love with him but Azhagappan refuses her love considering the age difference between him. Though illiterate Azhagappan studies in a tutorial centre where his teacher Kanmani (Geetha) is smitten by him but Azhagappan is not interested in her. Classical dancer Priya Ranjan (Bhanupriya) and Azhagappan though fall in love. After egos and differences crop up between them, Driver Santhanam blurts out the truth that the four children are the orphans adopted by him. In the end, Swapna understands the situation and would love to call him as "Daddy". With the help of Kanmani and Swapna, four children devises a plan and plays a mediator between Azhagan and Priya by making them speak on the phone. In the end, both reveal their love through the phone and get united in the end.

Balu (Karthik) is a graduate youth, came from his village to town, who want to become rich. He works as a police informer and fall in love with Janaki (Sithara), the daughter of Inspector Veerapandian. Veerapandian asks Balu to watch closely his daughter if she had a boyfriend. In the same time, Veerapandian's ennemy Kumar (Nassar) tries to kidnap her daughter, they fail due to his opposition. Balu finds an illegal drug trade and his house's owner was sent in jail, then his all family commits suicide. Veerapandian is promoted as assistant commissioner and Balu resigns his job. One day, Veerapandian finds Balu in a crime scene and asks him to say who's the killer but he refuses. Even beaten, he says nothing and he cannot find a job. Baby is killed and Balu decides to steal the money from criminals. Balu becomes rich and Kumar falls in love with Balu's sister Parvathi. Balu was later arrested by Veerapandian and Kumar refuses to save him, his sister realises that she has been cheated by Kumar and Kumar kills her. Janaki tells that the culprit is Darmaraj and Veerapandian releases him. Balu kills Kumar and Darmaraj to revenge his sister death.

This refreshing tale from K. Balachander focuses on the fairly realistic tale of a famous singer Bharathi (Rahman with singing by S. P. Balasubrahmanyam) and his extremely possessive wife named Gowri (Geetha). Tricked into marriage by his convincing mother-in-law, what really irks Bharathi is his wife’s inability to deal with his rabid female fans. Tensions escalate until Bharathi flees from home and ends up encountering someone else named Jyothi (Sithara) who’s also escaping from her life as a dancer because her husband made her dance forcefully and tried forcing her to be a prostitute.
