When the Blue Raiders are called into Union service at the start of the American Civil War, their mascot drummer boy, John Clem defies his father’s wishes and smuggles himself on the train carrying the troops to camp. In spite of efforts by the troops to force him to give up and go home, Johnny refuses and tries to tough it out. He gets photographed by Matthew Brady. His father comes to get him, but Johnny runs away and returns to the regiment. He finally wears down Capt. McPherson, who agrees to let him join the regiment officially. At the Battle of Shiloh, Johnny and General George Henry Thomas rally the retreating Federal forces, but his friend Jeremiah Sullivan is killed. At the Battle of Chickamauga, Johnny wounds a Confederate Colonel who was attacking his friend Gabe Trotter. After the battle, General Ulysses S. Grant promotes Gabe to a lieutenant and Johnny is promoted to sergeant. Johnny and Gabe deliver an important message to General James B. Steedman, but on the way back to Thomas’s headquarters, Gabe is wounded and Johnny is captured. Even though questioned by General Joseph Wheeler he refuses to talk. He makes a daring escape and returns to the union lines.

The story is set after the end of the Second World War and concerns a British submarine, HMS Trojan, which is out on a routine exercise to test its new snorkel mast when it encounters a derelict floating magnetic mine left over from the war. The submarine dives, but sets off the mine. The mine blows the bows of the submarine off, and floods the after section through the displaced snorkel mast, instantly killing all 53 of the crew in the bows and stern section. The submarine settles to the bottom leaving twelve crew members alive amidships, who have been saved by the watertight doors which had been closed by order of the captain when he realised the imminent danger., 2h

Handcuffed together, George Martin (Jack Warner) and Willie Stannard (George Cole) are two newly convicted criminals being transported to prison. Martin is a hardened, cynical career criminal, while Stannard is a naïve, rather dull-witted youth who has never previously been in trouble with the law, maintains his innocence of the rape for which he has been convicted and is terrified by the prospect of prison. During the journey the pair manage to escape. Martin steals an army officer's uniform and passes Stannard off as a deserter in his charge, being returned to face a military tribunal., 1h22

At the start of the Second World War, musician George Hepplewhite (George Formby) gets on a boat thinking he is on his way to Blackpool, but arrives in Bergen, Norway instead, where he is mistaken for another ukulele player. He then meets the desk girl at the hotel, Mary Wilson (Phyllis Calvert), who is a British undercover agent and thinks he is one too. The duo manage to find and break a code that the Nazis are using to sink Allied shipping. A noted sequence was a dream where George had been given a truth drug by the Nazi conductor Mendez, in which he gives Hitler a right hook.
