Roberto La Rocca, au passé trouble, s'est retiré des « affaires » à la campagne. Un jour, un informateur lui apprend que son ami Xavier Adé a été injustement incarcéré pour meurtre. Afin de venir en aide à son ami, La Rocca contacte à Marseille Villanova, l'ex-associé de Xavier qu'il soupçonne de cette machination. Lors de leur affrontement, La Rocca l'abat et, du coup, renoue avec le milieu en accaparant son tripot. Il poursuit néanmoins son objectif en joignant Geneviève, la sœur de Xavier. Lors d'un racket, il est blessé et capturé. Il retrouve Xavier en prison. On leur propose d'anticiper leur libération s'ils acceptent de participer au déminage de garrigues maritimes restées piégées depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Lors de l'une de ces dangereuses opérations, Xavier perd un bras en voulant protéger La Rocca. Cet acte héroïque leur vaut d'être immédiatement libérés. Pour l'avenir, Xavier et Geneviève souhaitent s'associer avec La Rocca en achetant ensemble une grande propriété. Sans en informer La Rocca, Xavier profite de l'infirmité de Nevada, un riche truand, pour lui extorquer l'argent nécessaire. Pendant que Xavier est parti signer l'acte d’achat, les hommes de main de Nevada font irruption à son domicile où ils trouvent La Rocca et Geneviève. Durant la rixe qui s'ensuit, Geneviève est mortellement blessée en s'interposant devant le revolver qui visait La Rocca. Celui-ci rompt définitivement son amitié avec Xavier qu'il rend responsable du décès de Geneviève.

À la suite d'un accident de voiture l'ayant projeté dans la Seine, Pierre se retrouve cloué au lit, à l'hôpital. Épicurien au caractère grognon, il aime le silence et la solitude. La vie de l'hôpital, avec ses allées et venues, n'est donc pas pour lui plaire. Blessé, il assiste impuissant à la tournée quotidienne des médecins, kinés, infirmières et personnels servant cafés et repas. Une jeune fille s'invite régulièrement dans sa chambre pour lui emprunter son ordinateur, ce qui l'énerve. In this tragic tale of misunderstanding, obsession, and increasing madness, "Elle," a beautiful young woman (Isabelle Adjani) settles into a small town in the south of France with her introverted mother (Maria Machado) and physically handicapped father and soon becomes the subject of wild speculation because of her aloofness and at the same time, her obvious sexuality. The young woman is actually caught up in the desire to avenge the long-ago rape of her mother, a rape committed by three men who had arrived at her isolated house in a van which contained an old piano which they were delivering. A shy car mechanic (Alain Souchon) becomes enamored of her, and the woman suddenly sees him in a different light when she learns that his father, now dead, was an Italian immigrant who had owned and tried unsuccessfully to pawn the piano. Intent on taking action against the mechanic's family to right the wrong suffered by her mother, the daughter begins to lose her grip on sanity when she finds out that the men she suspects of the rape are actually innocent. In fact, her father had long ago exacted his own vengeance on the real culprits. This knowledge pushes her over the edge, and she has to be institutionalized. Meanwhile, the young mechanic misunderstands what happened and that leads to tragedy; he tracks down and kills the innocent men Elle had suspected of raping her mother, believing them to be responsible for Elle's current condition.

Germain is a 45-year-old illiterate handyman who has not had much luck in his life so far. He was bullied at school, both by the teacher and the other pupils because he was a slow reader. His mother never gave him love and affection, and kept reminding him that he was clumsy and an unwanted child, the result of fling at the French national holiday. But he ks loyal, with a good heart, and still parks his trailer close to her house where he maintains his lovely vegetable garden. He earns some extra money by taking his vegetables to the weekly farmer's market, in the truck borrowed from the bar where he relaxes every day with his friends, joking and chatting. His girl friend Annette is a younger woman who drives the local bus, and very much in love with this sweet, simple and loving man.
