For his performance Carlo Croccolo won the David di Donatello for best supporting actor. The film also won the David di Donatello and the Nastro d'Argento for best costumes.
Synopsis
In 1862 in Naples, King Francis II of Bourbon is driven from his throne by the people, because the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte comes in Italy to conquer it. King Francesco retires to Rome with his wife Maria Sofia. The woman tries to recover the kingdom of Naples, supporting the uprising of young patriots, but Francesco is demoralized and has no intention of fighting. Rome, 1825. Cornacchia, a shoemaker, finds out that prince Filippo Spada, a Carbonari associate, is going to reveal the organization's plans for an uprising to the Pontifical Guard's commander, Colonel Nardoni. He then goes off to warn his friend Leonida Montanari, a doctor and head of the conspirators, who decides to take out the informer. He and Angelo Targhini, a newcomer from the Duchy of Modena, attempt to murder Spada but ultimately fail to deliver the final blow. Spada manages to survive the attack and report his assailants to the police, having them both arrested and subsequently, after a summary judgement, sentenced to death by Cardinal Rivarola.

Rome, early 1800. Cecilia is a commoner who runs an inn, where the specialty is the so-called "pasta carbonara". The film is set in Rome in 1848 - 1849. Violent revolutionary uprisings by young liberals create havoc in the city, while the Church and the nobles do not care and think only of saving their property. The King of Italy for convenience supports the policy of the French emperor, intending himself to fight against Austria to regain the old domains to Italy many years ago. During the Second Punic War, the commander Scipio Africanus is in crisis because the Roman army can not defeat the many legions Carthaginian Hannibal Barca.
