Deux harmonies communales se retrouvent ex-æquo pour représenter la Belgique à la grande finale européenne : l'une est flamande, l'autre wallonne. Mais au cours de la compétition, le trompettiste flamand décède juste après sa prestation, alors que Hugues, le Wallon, brille particulièrement. Elke, administratrice et fille du chef d'orchestre flamand, décide de le débaucher. Le frère de Hugues, chef d'orchestre de la formation wallonne, refuse la partition écrite par son frère pour la finale. Frustré, Hugues passe dans le camp adverse où son charme fait des ravages, au point de séduire Elke, pourtant en instance de mariage avec Renaat le fils du sponsor de l'orchestre. Hugues propose sa partition à son nouvel orchestre, qui n'y montre aucun enthousiasme.

Luc Segers est heureux. Il habite une belle maison avec son épouse Ella et leur fille Anna et obtiendra bientôt un poste à la direction de l'entreprise Logistics. Salvatore Granata is a rather poor man who lives with his wife, son and daughter in Calabria in Italy. One day Salvatore decides to move to Belgium to work in the coal mine of Waterschei as a gastarbeider. His family will stay in Italy as Salvatore will only be in Belgium for three years. He hopes to earn much money in a rather small timeframe so he can buy a forge for his son Rocco who is now still a 9 year old boy. After a year, Salvatore decides his family should be with him, so they also move to Belgium. They soon discover the life of a gastarbeider is difficult: they have to live in some kind of barracks, they are neglected by the Belgian people and they do not earn much. They are astonished when they hear Salvatore signed a contract of five years and male children of gastarbeiders are ought to work in the mines as soon they leave high school. Rocco meets Helena, the daughter of the local grocer shop. However, the man is a racist and forbids his daughter to play with Italian boys.

Set during World War II, somewhere in Romania. Sur fond des années 1930 à Genève on suit l'histoire d'amour contrariée tout d'abord entre Solal (Rhys Meyers) sous-secrétaire général à la SDN (Société des Nations) et de Ariane (Vodianova) car cette dernière est mariée à Adrien Deume, lui-même employé à la SDN et grand admirateur de Solal. Ce dernier le promeut et l'envoie en voyage pour le compte de la SDN. Solal a alors le champ libre pour faire une cour empressée à Ariane. Très rapidement, les amants vivent ensemble dans un hôtel en Italie au bord de la mer, puis dans une villa achetée par Solal, dans le nord de l'Italie avec vue sur un lac. Tout le film porte désormais sur le couple adultère.

Akkie (Hanna Obbeek) is a 6th grader that absolutely adores soccer and can't wait until the school tournament at the end of the year. Her classmate Joep (Nils Verkooijen) makes fun of her for this in the hopes of catching her attention, as he has a crush on Akkie. Things take a turn for the tragic when Akkie discovers that she has leukemia. Despite this, Akkie tries to keep herself busy by helping to prepare for the upcoming soccer tournament. The Flemish boys Lars, Philip and Jozef are somewhere between 20 and 30 years of age and each has a physical handicap. Jozef is almost blind and needs to use a magnifier. Philip suffers from paraplegia. He can only move his head and can use one hand which gives him the strength to control his automated wheelchair. Lars has an incurable brain tumor a side effect of which is that he is restricted to a wheelchair as a result of his increasing paralysis. The three are good friends and visit each other frequently.

Claire, a 70-year-old woman, and her husband have a car accident in which last one dies. On the day of his funeral, Claire is reunited with Lut and Magda. Five married men share ownership of an upmarket loft, which they use to discreetly meet their respective mistresses.
