L'action se déroule à Orvieto. Au cours d'une représentation théâtrale, Giovanni Lo Verso tombe amoureux de Roberta qui joue sur scène le rôle d'un soldat. Alberto is a sculptor who sometimes has trouble separating his fantasies from reality. He shares a home in Naples with his Uncle Nicola. One night after meeting the beautiful Tania, he dreams that his neighbour, Amitrano, has been murdered by his family. He reports it to the police. Later he tells the police that he may have just imagined it but the police refuse to believe him, knowing that Amitrano was a gangster, and arrest him. Then Amitrano appears and demands Alberto's passport so he can escape to South America. Eventually Alberto and Tania flee from Naples.

It tells the World War II era story of a cynical, successful businessman named Domenico (Mastroianni), who, after meeting a naive country girl, Filumena (Loren), one night in a Neapolitan brothel, keeps frequenting her for years in an on-off relationship (as she continues working as a prostitute). He eventually takes her in his house as a semi-official mistress under the pretense that she take care of his ailing, senile mother. After having fallen for a younger, prettier girl and having planned to marry her, he finds himself cornered when Filumena feigns illness and "on her deathbed", asks to be married to him. Thinking she'll be dead in a matter of hours and that the 'marriage' won't even be registered, he agrees. After having been proclaimed his legal bride, the shrewd and resourceful Filumena drops the charade and reveals to have put up the show for the one child she bore from him (she gave birth to three sons but Domenico always maintained to have fathered none). Domenico tries to cajole her into telling him which one is his but she stalwartly refuses, telling him that sons can't be picked and chosen and that he has to be the father of all three. Set in the poorer Naples of 1953, Adelina (Loren) supports her unemployed husband Carmine (Mastroianni) and child by selling black market cigarettes. When she doesn't pay a fine, her furniture is to be repossessed. However her neighbors assist her by hiding the furniture. A lawyer who lives in the neighborhood advises Carmine that as the fine and furniture is in Adelina's name, she will be imprisoned. However, Italian law stipulates that women cannot be imprisoned when pregnant or within six months after a pregnancy. As a result Adelina schemes to purposely stay pregnant. After seven children, Carmine is seriously exhausted and Adelina must make the choice of being impregnated by their mutual friend Pasquale (Aldo Giuffrè) or be incarcerated.

Don Felice Sciosciammocca becomes mayor of the town of Roccasecca. The grandson Ciccillo is an idler that is in the distant Naples to spend unnecessary money that his uncle sends him to continue his studies in medicine and a friend supports him in pursuing this futile activity hilarious. However one day Don Felice choose to go with the whole family in town to see the new hospital that opened Ciccillo, as he had written falsely relative to the first day, and then to his grandson will be trouble. In fact Ciccillo wanted more money and come up with a good reason to justify the request he made up the story that he had opened a clinic for the mentally ill. Now to extricate himself from deception Ciccillo asks an acquaintance to give him a few hours to control a pension for old to make her visit to Don Felice. Man, being a simpleton, he sees a group of old men who are trying some scenes of a tragedy of William Shakespeare and then sees people coming and going to his bedroom at night. So Felice really believe to be in a clinic crazy, but sooner or later the chickens come home to roost and Don Felice discovers the truth.

Italy in the Fifties. The image of grandeur and opulence, brought by the arrival of American troops in 1944, still has its effect on many young Italians. One of them is Ferdinand "Nando" Mericoni (Alberto Sordi), a connoisseur of the American world as represented in American cinema of which he is fervent devotee.
