Salvador Mallo est un réalisateur qui a connu le succès mais qui ne réalise plus de films à cause de nombreuses douleurs physiques dont il souffre. Par hasard, il retrouve Alberto Crespo, un acteur avec qui il s'est fâché trente ans auparavant. Il se remémore son enfance avec sa mère à Paterna.
À la veille de quitter Madrid pour s'installer au Portugal avec son amant Lorenzo, Julieta rencontre fortuitement Beatriz, amie d'enfance de sa fille Antía. Elle apprend ainsi que cette fille qui est partie sans donner de nouvelles il y a plus de douze ans vit encore, en Suisse, avec trois enfants.
Two plane passengers discover that they know a man named Pasternak: the woman is his former girlfriend, and the man is a music critic who savagely reviewed his work. They discover that everybody on the flight is connected to Pasternak. An air stewardess reveals that Pasternak is the plane's pilot and has locked himself into the cockpit. Pasternak crashes the plane into his parents' house.
The film opens as ground technician León (Antonio Banderas) removes the chocks from the wheels of an Airbus A340 for Peninsula Flight 2549. He waves to his wife Jessi (Penélope Cruz ), who is towing a luggage cart across the tarmac. The distraction causes her to crash into another ground technician who was checking Twitter. León checks on his wife to make sure she is okay, and she reveals that she is pregnant.
Plastic surgeon Robert Ledgard was successful in cultivating an artificial skin resistant to burns and insect bites, which he calls "GAL", that he says he has been testing on athymic mice. He presents his results in a medical symposium but when he privately discloses he has also conducted illegal transgenic experiments on humans, he is forbidden to continue with his research.
"The Elephant's Journey", in which Saramago narrates the adventures and antics of an elephant transported from the court of King John III of Portugal to that of the Austrian Archduke Maximillian, is the starting point of José and Pilar.
"Harry Caine" is a blind writer who shares his life with his agent Judit and her adult son, Diego. Slowly, events in the present begin to bring back memories of the past. Harry hears that millionaire Ernesto Martel has died; a young filmmaker, Ray X, appears and turns out to be Martel's son, Ernesto, Jr. After Diego is hospitalized for an accidental drug overdose in a Madrid nightclub, Harry collects Diego from the hospital and looks after him to avoid worrying his traveling mother. The main storyline is told in flashback as Harry reluctantly tells Diego a tragic tale of fate, jealousy, abuse of power, betrayal, and guilt.

Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) and Soledad (Lola Dueñas) are sisters who grew up in Alcanfor de las Infantas, a small village in La Mancha, but now both live in Madrid. Their parents died in a tragic fire three years prior to the beginning of the film. The events which occurred on the night of the fire are only gradually revealed, and are central to the plot.
In Madrid in 1980, Enrique Goded, a young film director, is looking for his next project when he receives the unexpected visit of an actor looking for work. The actor claims to be Enrique's boarding school friend and first love, Ignacio Rodriguez. Ignacio, who is using now the name Ángel Andrade, has brought with him a short story titled "The Visit" hoping that Enrique would be interested in making a film out of it giving him the starring role. Enrique is intrigued since "The Visit" described their time together at the Catholic school and it also includes a fictionalized account of their reunion many years later as adults.
Madrid, Christmas 1970: with the nation under a state of emergency ordered by the Franco regime, a young prostitute, Isabel Plaza Caballero (Penélope Cruz), gives birth on a bus to a son she names Victor. Twenty years later, Victor Plaza (Liberto Rabal) shows up for a date he made with Elena (Francesca Neri), a junkie with whom he had sex a week earlier. Waiting for her dealer to arrive, Elena is not interested in seeing Victor and tells him to leave. Finally she gets a gun and orders him out of the flat. Enraged, Victor wrestles the gun from her; in the process Elena gets knocked out, and the gun goes off.
Caught out by their French teacher, Joseph, Igor and Nourdine end up with punishment for the following topic : "You wake up one morning and you see that in the night, you were transformed into adults. Completely distraught, you rush into your parent's room. They were transformed in children. Tell result." Unfortunately for them, the subject will become reality.
À la mort de sa mère, Martin, adolescent de douze ans, rejoint en Afrique un père qu'il ne connaît pas. Reçu plutôt fraîchement par ce père plus préoccupé par la réserve dont il a la charge que de ce nouveau fils, Martin va découvrir ce pays et ses contradictions grâce à l'amitié de Fofana et Victor. La disparition des éléphants va rapprocher le père et le fils.
