The film touches on race relations, incest, drugs, and growing up gay in the American South. A recent New York City transplant, Sequan Greene (Derrick L. On the morning of his thirty-seventh birthday, Michael Brown (Adam Scott) receives a telephone call from his estranged drug addicted brother Tobey (Joel Bissonnette). The two travel in an old BMW across Los Angeles in search of Tobey’s “reason for living”, which Michael believes is something/someone deeply personal while Tobey is actually looking for cheap drugs. At various stops, Michael phones his girlfriend, leaving messages professing his love and a desire to spend his birthday together. Tobey eventually informs Michael that his own ex-girlfriend called recently, and the two plan to get married as soon as possible.
