Synopsis
L'histoire se déroule dans les années 1950-1955 dans une mission lointaine de Guinée, alors sous administration francaise. Le jeune prêtre missionnaire Jean Maurel arrive à sa première mission, celle d'Affob, dirigée par le père Gauthier, spiritain en apparence effacé et rêveur, tandis qu'il s'agit de préparer l'avenir d'une Afrique confrontée aux nouveaux défis. Le jeune père Maurel au bout de quelque temps d'acclimatation réalise enfin son rêve, celui d'être responsable d'un secteur de mission dans la brousse. Il admire son confrère le père Derval, de dix ans plus âgé, qui lui paraît le modèle du « broussard » à qui semble tout réussir. Mais bientôt le jeune homme se confronte aux tentations de l'Afrique profonde et mystérieuse ; sentiment de ne pas être à sa place et d'être inutile, alors qu'il doit s'habituer à de longs palabres avec les chefs de village, se confronter avec les peurs et superstitions des autochtones, les mariages forcés et le temps immobile. Entre découragements et découvertes, il va apprendre au fil des années à aimer les qualités et les défauts de ces populations et traverse des périodes de profondes joies partagées, jusqu'au jour où, atteint de fièvre bilieuse, il est rappelé pour se soigner en France métropolitaine. Il a trente-cinq ans et doit faire le bilan de sa vie de missionnaire qu'il juge ne pas avoir réussie. Mais ayant expérimenté la communion des saints, il comprend que la question n'est pas la réussite humaine et connaît une véritable conversion.Actors

In the early 20th century, Emir Nesib (Antonio Banderas), Sultan of Hobeika, and Sultan Amar (Mark Strong) of Salmaah have been in a border war over a vast barren strip they call "The Yellow Belt". When Nesib wins he forces Amar to agree to a peace pact: the Yellow Belt will belong to neither, becoming a no-mans-land between their territories, and Emir Nesib will take Sultan Amar's sons, Saleh and Auda, as hostages. Amar reluctantly agrees, knowing the hostages are a sacred trust which binds Nesib as well. They both swear to the pact before God. Nesib promises to rear Amar's sons with his own children, Tariq and Leyla.

Under the watchful eyes of Father Silvano Bentivoglio (Carmen Argenziano) and Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) initiates the Large Hadron Collider and creates three vials of antimatter particles larger than any that have ever been produced before. Almost immediately, Father Silvano is killed and one of the vials of antimatter goes missing. At the same time, the Roman Catholic Church is mourning the sudden death of Pope Pius XVI in Rome and prepares for the papal conclave to elect the next Pope. The Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) assumes temporary control of the Vatican. The Illuminati kidnap four of the 'preferiti' (the favourite cardinals to be elected pope) before the conclave enters seclusion and threaten to kill one candidate every hour and destroy all of Vatican City at midnight, using the missing vial of antimatter as a bomb. The Vatican summons symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) from Harvard University and Vittoria from CERN to help them save the four preferiti and locate the vial.

L'histoire du film débute en 1945, l'année de la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, juste avant la Guerre israélo-arabe de 1948-1949. Au fil du temps, constatant que la nouvelle vie dont elle rêvait ne voit pas le jour, Fania devient de plus en plus triste et finit même par se suicider, laissant à son fils une certaine vision de la littérature qui l'influencera dans ses écrits toute sa vie. L'histoire se termine en 1953, cinq ans après la proclamation de l'État d’Israël, quand Amos, maintenant âgé de 18 ans, s'en va habiter dans un kibboutz.

Christine is a wheelchair-using woman with severe multiple sclerosis. In order to escape her isolation, she makes a journey to Lourdes, the iconic site of Catholic pilgrimage in the Pyrenees Mountains, along with other people with varying disabilities. During her stay she begins to regain the use of her limbs. This is in contrast with others, who appear to have stronger faith than Christine but experience only slight, passing improvement. Her fellow pilgrims are eager to call it a miracle; however, as the pilgrimage draws to a close, exactly how accurate a claim this is becomes uncertain.

The story centers around a foster family made up of a group of misfits. Mrs. Hobbes (Ellen Bry) is all alone in the world when her husband dies, but through her faith and belief in the goodness of people, discovers she has the power to help those in need and find peace within herself. She first meets Crystal, a sweet little girl whose mother was hooked to the drug Crystal and named her child after it. Then she meets Jasmine, who doesn't talk because of her past experiences. Soon she meets Justin and Teri, two teenagers with bad attitudes. Teri used to be hooked on drugs and Justin saved his father's life only to watch him die from cancer a year later. Lastly she meets Max, a young boy whose mother doesn't love him. Through these children and God, Esther begins to find courage to save the house. She soon discovers the house is a historical building and with the help of the children and the parents they save the home. Esther then find people to invest in allowing her to build more homes for foster children. Toward the end of the movie, Jasmine speaks to Esther after years of being silent: "Thank you".
