Synopsis
A pair of onetime teenage sweethearts and lovers, Ken (Richard Egan) and Sylvia (Dorothy McGuire), come from different social strata. Ken was a self-supporting college student, working as a lifeguard at the Maine resort of Pine Island, while Sylvia's nouveau riche family stayed as guests of the owners one summer between years at college. After their love affair, they married other people. Twenty years on, Sylvia has a son, Johnny (Troy Donahue), and Ken a daughter, Molly (Sandra Dee).Actors

The plot revolves around a naive 17-year-old girl, Susan Slade (Connie Stevens), who becomes pregnant during a shipboard romance with Conn White, a mountain climber (Grant Williams). Her parents decide that it is best for Susan to allow them to pass the baby off as theirs to protect her reputation. Feeling helpless, Susan reluctantly agrees to pretend to be the baby's older sister. Later, two suitors, Hoyt Brecker (Troy Donahue) and Wells Corbett (Bert Convy) court Susan, not knowing that she is a mother. Susan increasingly struggles with the lie she is living with and finds it difficult to keep up the charade especially with the new love in her life.

Albert Gallatin "Lat" Evans (Don Murray), an earnest young cowboy determined to better his situation, wins a job with a cattle drive by busting a wild horse. A group of college students from Los Angeles travel to Palm Springs to spend the Easter weekend there. The film opens at Burger-Matic, where Henry Lever (Chris Ellis) orders a milkshake at the drive-thru. At the window, he tells the attendant, Sally Jackson (Drew Barrymore), that his wife knows about their affair. She asks him if he has also told his wife about her pregnancy. On his way home, he encounters a ferocious wind. It turns out to be an attack helicopter, which runs him off the road. In a panic, he flees through the woods and drops his heart medication. At an outdoor chapel, he sits on a bench as the helicopter hovers in front of him. The pilot, Angus Montier (Jake Busey), shoots at the ground near him despite the protests of his copilot and brother, Dorian (Luke Wilson). The shots scare him enough to cause a fatal heart attack.
