Synopsis
Company commander Claus M. Pedersen and his men are stationed in the Helmand province. Meanwhile back in Denmark Claus' wife Maria is trying to hold everyday life together, with a husband at war and three children missing their father. During a routine mission, the soldiers are caught in heavy crossfire and in order to save his men, Claus makes a decision that has grave consequences for him - and his family back home.Actors

Mikkel Hartmann, the cook on board the Danish merchant ship "Rosen", is anxious to return to his wife and child in Denmark. Jan Sørensen, the ship's engineer, asks him to bring a letter home to his family. Back in Denmark, shipping company representative Lars Vestergaard, unable to close a difficult deal, requests help from CEO Peter Ludvigsen, who talks a group of Japanese businessmen down from an adamant offer. Ludvigsen suddenly learns that pirates in the Indian Ocean have hijacked the "Rosen". On the ship, the crew is separated into two groups, and Hartmann is forced at gunpoint to cook a meal. Automatic gunfire punctuates the night, frightening the hostages and keeping the atmosphere tense.

During the night of 9 April 1940, the Danish army is alerted that the Germans have crossed the border, Denmark is now at war with Europe's strongest army. In South Jutland a Danish bicycle infantry company and a motorcycle platoon is ordered to hold off the German advance until reinforcements can arrive. In the fateful morning hours we follow Second Lieutenant Sand (Pilou Asbæk) and his platoon of soldiers. They will be the first Danish soldiers to meet the enemy in battle.

The film begins with the main character Ivan Yermakov (Alexei Chadov) being interviewed, and as he begins his story the films cuts to the spring of 2000, during the Second Chechen War, shortly after the fall of Grozny. A Chechen warlord Aslan Gugayev (Giorgi Gurgulia) runs a camp next to a mountain aul in the Chechen highlands. Despite having secure income from his organized crime gangs in Moscow, Saint Peterburg and Samara as well as some legitimate business there, he takes joy in kidnapping, since that is more patriotic and militant than random crime. Both Ivan and his comrade Fyodka were enslaved after they were taken prisoners in early 2000. They are held captive with a Russian-Jewish businessman named Semyon from Vladikavkaz, who was being held for ransom.

In early April 2006, Private First Class Angel "Sally" Salazar (Izzy Diaz), a young United States Army soldier serving in the Iraq War, is an aspiring filmmaker who enlisted in the U.S. Army to help him get into film school, as he "did not get into USC". Salazar, based out of Camp "The Oven" Carolina, near Samarra, Iraq, is using his camcorder to record an amateur documentary, Tell Me No Lies, about his deployment in Samarra, to present to a film school of his choice as part of his future enrollment there as a student. Meanwhile, a French documentary crew is shooting a documentary called Barrage while they are embedded with Salazar's platoon.
