It is the debut feature film from Canadian director B. P. Paquette, and co-stars Micheline Lanctôt, Harry Hill, and Darryl Hunter.
Presented at numerous film festivals in countries from around the world, and honoured with prizes and accolades, A Year in the Death of Jack Richards absolutely polarized critics when it was released in commercial theatres.

Sa femme assassinée en pleine rue par un fou, Alexis quitte son travail, vide son compte en banque et part sans but. Il s'intéresse à la vie des autres. Des paysans barrent les routes, des commerçants manifestent alors qu'à la télévision, on fusille en direct des contestataires. Il rencontre Daphné puis s'installe chez elle. Daphné est fragile mentalement à tendance cyclothymique. Ils décident ensemble d'entreprendre "le voyage" dont l'issue ne peut être que la mort. Ils abandonnent tout et partent ensemble sur les routes. C'est ensuite une succession de prise d'otages, fusillades, pendaisons et le spectacle d'un pays complètement pollué. Au terme du voyage, ayant épuisé leurs dernières ressources, Daphné change d'avis et ne veut plus mourir. Alexis y renonce aussi. Ils retournent chez lui, mais l'appartement est occupé par des gens qui vivent dans la terreur les uns des autres. Ils décident de continuer malgré les horreurs qui les entourent.

The film opens to the sounds of a couple having sex. Afterwards, Carlos the Jackal (Aidan Quinn) kills a spider in its web with his cigarette and evicts the woman (Lucie Laurier) from his room because he claims he has work to do. He is seen donning a disguise, and he walks to a cafe where CIA officer Jack Shaw (Donald Sutherland) is sitting at a table outdoors. He recognizes Shaw and asks for a light. Shaw does not recognize Carlos, because of his disguise, but he turns to watch Carlos enter the cafe. He watches as Carlos detonates a grenade, killing dozens of people.
