The film is set in the Lužec castle located in the town of Vroutek (German: Rudig) in Sudetenland (Czech and Slovak: Sudety) shortly after World War II.
Synopsis
A decommissioned Czechoslovak soldier Viktor Chotovický (Petr Čepek) returns to his homeland from the Western front after spending much of the war in Aberdeen, Scotland employed at a RAF desk job. He is being appointed the caretaker of an empty manor (Zámek Lužec), formerly occupied by a German family of a notorious Nazi war-criminal imprisoned by the authorities. The soldier Viktor Chotovický meets his beautiful daughter Adelheid Heidenmann (Emma Černá), sister of an SS officer who disappeared in the Eastern Front. Adelheid works as a cleaning lady at her own mansion. Viktor makes her his captive maid, and soon falls in love with her. His heart is torn between feelings of desire and his national identity and sympathies. However, Adelheid silently waits for her brother to return, which he does.Actors

Two brothers, Mikoláš and one-armed Adam, along with a small group of men, ambushing a wagon and men traveling on a country road in the middle of winter. The attackers massacre most of the travelers, one escapes, Mikoláš chases and captures one and his men capture another. The man who escaped, a Saxon aristocrat, turns out to be the new Bishop of Hennau and a close ally of the local king. The two captives are the Bishop's son and his assistant. When Mikoláš returns to the site of the ambush, he finds a group of scavengers, led by Lazar, a neighbor of Mikoláš's, stripping the dead. Mikoláš' first impulse is to kill Lazar, but spares him after Lazar prays to Christ to forgive Mikoláš. Mikoláš returns to his village where his father, Kozlík, is the clan patriarch. Kozlík becomes furious at Mikoláš for allowing a man to escape, for bringing home two captives and for allowing Lazar to live. When Mikoláš explains that he took the captives for ransom, his father asks him if he intends to travel to Saxony to claim the ransom or if Mikoláš intends to invite the Saxons to bring their army to their small clan village.

The story commences on the streets of Prague on a grey morning with commuters bustling about. We are introduced to the figure of an Everyman, played by Petr Čepek, a colourless figure emerging from a metro station. On his way home, the man encounters two men handing out flyers. It is a map of the city with a location marked in. He shrugs and discards it, returning to his lodging. As he opens the door, a black cockerel runs out. The man sits down to eat, cutting himself a slice of bread. He discovers an egg concealed inside the loaf. He cracks it open but it is empty. Suddenly the lights go out and the wind rises. Objects are thrown about the room. The commotion ceases; the man goes to the window and looks down to where the two men from earlier are staring up at him. One of them holds the cockerel. The man closes the blind and returns to the table, where he finds the map and, using his own map of the city, traces out the location marked.
