Alaigal Oyivathillai (English: Waves don't cease) is a 1981 Indian Tamil language film directed by P. Bharathiraja. The film stars debutant actors Karthik and Radha in the lead roles. The movie was a blockbuster and Ilaiyaraja's music and songs were highly praised.The story and dialogues written by veteran writer and director Manivannan. The film became a cult classic. The film received eight Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.

Synopsis

The character played by Karthik belongs to a poor Hindu family in coastal Tamil Nadu. His mother, played by Kamala Kamesh, teaches music to Radha, who belongs to a relatively rich Christian family. The characters fall in love with each other but belong to different religions. The rest of the story is about how they deal with the society and vice versa.

Mayil (Sridevi) is a 16-year-old schoolgirl who lives in a village with her mother, Guruvammal (Ganthimathi). Shanmugakani (K. Bhagyaraj) arrives in the village of Thaayamangalam as the new school teacher and soon falls in love with a local damsel Jothi (Rati Agnihotri). The village head called as "Periyavar" (played by G.Srinivasan) is a lecherous and sinister man who has a lustful eye on Jothi. He asks Amavasai and Jothi to stay with him in order to satiate his lust with Jothi. What happens afterwards forms the rest of the story.
