Bassi and Edwin are the two laziest, most irresponsible construction workers in their workers' brigade. When they fall in love with their neighbors Thea and Susi, they pretend to be reliable young men and accompany their friends to a meeting of the local chapter house. To keep up appearances, the two are forced to undertake several duties which they would not have dreamed of doing otherwise. The plot turns into a chain of comical mistakes, but eventually the two new couples reunite and all ends well.

Wolfgang Schmidt travaille comme graphiste publicitaire à La Maison de la publicité. Il est mauvais, mais il sait parler et a ainsi beaucoup de relations. Il passe son temps libre à commenter des matchs de football et voudrait en faire son métier. Siegfried Huster, de la grande entreprise Bureau Central des Petits Imprimés, cherche un nouvel employé pour le siège. Le dossier de Schmidt lui fait bonne impression et, bien que Kühn, la directrice de La Maison de la publicité, essaie de le convaindre de l'incapacité de Schmidt, il ne la croit pas et décide de le convoquer. Lors de sa poignée de main avec Huster, Schmidt la trouve si forte qu'il serre les dents et perd une incisive. Comme il a tendance à bégayer, il ne dit rien aux questions de Huster puis parle rapidement.

François est journaliste. Son rédacteur en chef lui confie un reportage sur les ouvriers. Hélas pour François, l'ouvrier vers lequel il a été orienté, un nommé Claude, a d’autres préoccupations : sa femme Lily vient juste de quitter le foyer conjugal. François se montre alors moins soucieux de son article que de l'état moral de Claude. Il l'emmène en bordée : après lui avoir présenté son ami le boxeur Johnny Cask, les 3 hommes vont passer la soirée dans une réception chez des bourgeois en pleine passion prolétarienne et révolutionnaire. Claude n’ayant qu'une obsession, reconquérir Lily qui est retournée chez ses parents, le trio part à la campagne pour la retrouver. François déploie son talent de médiateur, et se montre vite optimiste sur la conclusion de l'entreprise. Les amis s'installent à l'hôtel dans le village voisin. Les jours passent, entre beuveries et discussions philosophiques. Claude fait le siège chez les parents de Lily. Johnny (de son vrai prénom Gaston) se maintient en forme pour remonter sur le ring.François écrit son article.

A committee of independent U.S. political party leaders have gathered to join forces and select a candidate for the upcoming presidential election. One of the committee members flippantly suggests nominating Linda Lovelace. The committee approaches the porn star, who agrees to be the flag bearer of the newly formed Upright Party. Lovelace’s campaign takes her on a cross-country tour, where she meets voters in stops ranging from crowded big cities to isolated rural towns. Lovelace’s popularity, however, threatens the Washington, D.C., establishment, and her political rivals dispatch a hit man known as The Assassinator to bring a fatal end to the Lovelace campaign.
