Add to a movie listAngels with Dirty Faces is a 1938 American gangster film directed by Michael Curtiz, and starring James Cagney, Pat O'Brien, Humphrey Bogart, Ann Sheridan, George Bancroft and the Dead End Kids. The film was written by Rowland Brown, John Wexley, and Warren Duff, with uncredited assistance from Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. The film is about Rocky Sullivan (Cagney), who is a notorious gangster. O'Brien plays his childhood friend, Father Jerry Connolly, who attempts to keep six young boys away from being influenced by Rocky. Jim Frazier (Bogart), a crooked lawyer and MacKeefer (Bancroft), a shady businessman and municipal contractor attempt to dispose of Rocky.
The film was released in November 28, 1938 to positive reviews. At the 11th Academy Awards, the film was nominated in three categories; for Best Actor (Cagney), Best Director (Curtiz) (who was also nominated for Four Daughters) and Best Story (Brown), losing all three.
Synopsis
Rocky Sullivan (James Cagney) and Jerry Connolly (Pat O'Brien) are childhood friends who robbed a railroad car as kids. Rocky saved Jerry's life during the chase by pulling him out of the way of a steam train while running from the guards that saw them. Rocky was then caught by the police, but Jerry—who could run faster—escaped. Rocky, after being sent to reform school, grew up to become a notorious gangster, while Jerry became a religious priest who mentored at-risk youth.Actors

The film opens after the great flood, with Noah and his family outside of the Ark praising the Lord. Then comes depictions of the building of the Tower of Babel and the worshipping of the golden calf. Then it switches to the eve of World War I. The theme of the gold calf is carried forward by a scene in which a bankrupted trader (Otto Hoffman) shoots his uncaring stockbroker.

Francis Bernardone (Bradford Dillman) is the son of a wealthy cloth merchant in Assisi, who gives up all his worldly goods to dedicate himself to God. Clare (Dolores Hart) is a young aristocratic woman who, according to the film, is so taken with St. Francis that she leaves her family and becomes a nun. By this time (1212 A.D.), St. Francis has a well-established reputation for his vows of poverty. The movie goes on to note miracles (such as the appearance of the stigmata on Francis's hands and feet) and other aspects of his life, up to and including his death on October 3, 1226. The funeral befitted a man loved by man and beast alike, and ended with the birds he loved doing a flyby.

As Jerry Golding (a young Korean War veteran) scales the heights of show business, he breaks the heart of his father, who had hoped that Jerry would instead follow in the footsteps of six consecutive generations of cantors in their family. Sorrowfully, Cantor David Golding reads the Kaddish service, indicating that, so far as he is concerned, his son is dead. When passed over for promotion at work in favor of a foreign-born friend, Frank Taylor (Humphrey Bogart), a midwestern factory worker, joins the anti-immigrant Black Legion, a secret white vigilante organization portrayed as related to the Ku Klux Klan. Dressed in black robes and hoods, Taylor and the Legion mount a torchlight raid and burn down the friend's chicken farm, driving him out of town, so that Taylor can gain the job he believed was his. Soon, however, Taylor's recruiting activities with the Legion get in the way of his work, and he is demoted in favor of neighbor Mike Grogan (Clifford Soubier). The Legion takes action again, attacking Grogan.
