Synopsis
François et sa compagne Christine s'installent dans la Vallée de Joux où François décrit dans un petit journal local, la vie des habitants. Il écrit également dans la rubrique cinéma, la chronique des films qui passent dans l'unique salle de cinéma du village. Mais comme il n'est ni journaliste, ni critique de cinéma, il rédige en "copiant" dans la revue Travelling, l'avis d'autres critiques. François se passionne pour le cinéma et lors d'une réunion à Lausanne, avec des critiques lémaniques, il fait connaissance de Rosa Rouge, une critique de cinéma reconnue. Une relation perverse s'instaure entre eux.Actors

Au début de 1974, à la suite de pressions politiques, le directeur de la Radio Suisse Romande se voit forcé de passer à l'antenne des programmes consensuels. P.J. Lurz, an industrialist with an office in a Berlin high-rise, informs his American headquarters that the company has difficulty selling its security-related computer systems to the West German government in Bonn. Nevertheless Lurz has hatched a secret plan to boost sales. Meanwhile Susanne, Lurz’s secretary, receives a phone call with the message: The world as will and idea. This is a code phrase among a secret group of thirty-something middle-class leftists and would-be terrorists to which she belongs. The film begins with Julie sitting on a park bench reading a book of magic spells when a woman (Céline) walks past, and begins dropping (à la Lewis Carroll's White Rabbit) various possessions. Julie begins picking them up, and tries to follow Céline around Paris, sometimes at a great pace (for instance, sprinting up Montmartre to keep pace with Céline's tram). After adventures following Céline around the Parisian streets — at one point it looks as if they have gone their separate ways, never to meet up again — Céline finally decides to move in with Julie. There are incidents of identity swapping, with Céline pretending to be Julie to meet the latter's childhood sweetheart, for example, and Julie attempting to fill in for Céline at a cabaret audition.

Olivier (Depardieu) is a small-time crook. He and a friend happen to meet a woman, Ariane (Ogier) whose plumbing needs to be fixed. They fix the pipes and learn that the landlord downstairs is away. They take the opportunity to burgle him. However they discover that in fact downstairs Ariane has a torture chamber—she is a professional dominatrix. At Ariane's request, Olivier assists her with her work and slowly becomes obsessed with her, but struggles with her sado-masochistic activities. Olivier tries to understand and take control of Ariane, whom he believes frightened in her job; however, as their love blossoms, their natural roles of dominant and submissive cannot be overcome.

A young woman is accused of having shot her uncle, but she claims he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun. Two friends are commissioned to write a film script based on this incident. Each of them chooses an approach in accordance with his profession. The journalist interviews the young woman, yet her statements seem to be contradictory. The romancier just makes up some fictitious explanations which seem plausible, but when he gets to know the woman she's very different from what he has imagined. In the end both refrain from working on this film project.
