Add to a movie listAruba is a 2006 Canadian coming-of-age dramatic short film and the fiction debut of director Hubert Davis. It was his first major work after his Academy Award-nominated film Hardwood.
Davis was inspired to create the film after having worked with "at risk kids" in Vancouver, and toward his film addressing issues found within Black communities, he "advocates the need for 'intelligent urban films' that offer a different perspective from the conventions of urban comedies and Black Entertainment TV."
The film has been archived in the National Film Board of Canada African-Canadian Issues Collection.
Synopsis
Milan (A.J. Saudin) is an 11-year-old boy who dreams about escaping a violent home life. When his parents fight or take drugs, or when bullies pick on him in school, he finds peace in contemplating a postcard with an idyllic picture of the island of Aruba, and imagines himself in that faraway place as a way to survive.Actors

The film focuses on Antwone "Fish" Fisher (Derek Luke), a temperamental young man with a violent history who is serving in the U.S. Navy. His father was killed before he was born and his teenage mother, Eva Mae Fisher, ended up arrested soon after and put in jail, where she gave birth to him. He was then placed in an orphanage until such time as she was released and could claim him. Since she had not yet claimed him, at the age of two Antwone was placed in a foster home run by a supposedly religious couple, Mr. and Mrs. Tate (Ellis Williams and Novella Nelson). There, Antwone faced mental and physical abuse by Mrs. Tate for many years until he finally left the home at age fourteen. After living out on the streets for the next few years, he decided to join the U.S. Navy to make something out of his life. However the rough life he had as child caused him to have a violent temper at this point.

Ashley Collins (Nicole Fox) a 17-year-old high school student is sitting smoking in a park playing with her gold lighter, then she deliberately burns her hand using the lit cigarette. Later she has an appointment with the school therapist Vincent (Tom Malloy) who sees the burn and questions how it happened but she refuses to talk. During class she beings to fantasize about kissing the Red Headed Girl (Mallory Moye) who is sitting in the front row. Un petit garçon termine de dessiner un cerf-volant à l'étage d'une maison remplie de canettes de bière vides. Il empile ensuite des canettes pour en faire une pyramide, mais le tas finit par s'écrouler et par rouler dans l'escalier. Au rez-de-chaussée, une femme ivre regarde une série sentimentale à la télévision. C'est la mère du petit garçon, qu'elle appelle « Courgette ». Au bruit, elle se met en colère et commence à monter l'escalier menant à l'étage, en annonçant au garçon qu'elle va le battre. Effrayé, le garçon referme brusquement la trappe sur la tête de sa mère qui tombe dans l'escalier et ne bouge plus. Au commissariat, un policier, Raymond, prend la déposition du petit garçon qui s'appelle Icare, mais préfère être appelé Courgette. Il n'a plus de père, mais il l'a dessiné sur son cerf-volant qui ne le quitte jamais. Raymond explique à Courgette que sa mère « est partie » et qu'il va l'emmener dans un endroit où vivent des enfants comme lui, qui n'ont plus ni père ni mère : un orphelinat.

In a women's prison in Brazil, the inmates are young and beautiful, the warden is a sadist, all but one of the guards are cruel, and the nurse is incompetent. To make it difficult for the inmates to hide contraband, they wear no underwear. They are alternately murderous and orgiastic with each other, and they engage in sex play with some of the guards. The warden pimps out inmates to wealthy lesbians. With the help of the nurse and under the cover of Carnival, three inmates stage an escape. But once out they contrive to stay undiscovered as the authorities close in.
