Beginner's Luck is a 1935 Our Gang short comedy film directed by Gus Meins. It was the 135th Our Gang short (47th talking episode) that was released. It was also the first short for Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer and Harold Switzer to appear.

Synopsis

Spanky has been entered into a kiddie amateur show by his pushy stage mother, who thinks he is the greatest actor of his day. Spanky wants nothing to do with this and would rather not act at all. The gang comes up with a plan to disrupt his recitation with peashooters and noisemakers and make him flop.

The gang reside at the Happy Home Orphanage, an inaptly-named organization run by the nasty and dishonest Mr. (Clarence Wilson) and Mrs. Crutch (Rosa Gore). A rich boy named Wally is being driven back to his family's mansion by Barclay, his snobbish and timid chauffeur. On the way, Wally tells Barclay to "drive through some alleys... some dirty ones" in an attempt to meet with the gang. He comes across them in an alley on a vacant lot, playing on a makeshift merry-go-round. While sailing their toy tugboat in a puddle outside their house, Wally and Spanky notice a moving van with a child-sized fire engine riding into the neighborhood. They quickly round up the rest of the gang, and follow the moving van to its destination. The fire truck's owner, a snobbish rich kid named Jerry, comes out to find a dozen strange children playing with his fire engine and shoos them all away, refusing to trade any sorts of collateral (pocket knives, gratitude) for even a ride. When Wally's girl Jane turns up, however, Jerry is quick to offer her a ride. Wally tries to dissuade Jane from riding with Jerry by telling her that the gang has a fire engine of its own, big enough to hold all of them. Jane agrees to a ride with Wally in his fire engine after she gets back from her ride with Jerry.
