The film was in the popular tradition of chanchadas, featuring stars of the musical stage. It was made by the Rio de Janeiro-based Cinédia studio. It was a follow-up to the hit Samba in Berlin (1944) which made fun of Brazil's World War II enemy Nazi Germany.

Two former backup soul singers, Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Bernie Mac), who have not spoken to each other in 30 years, reluctantly agree to travel across the country together to a reunion concert to honor their recently deceased lead singer, Marcus Hooks (John Legend). Cleo (Sharon Leal), a beautiful young woman in an abusive relationship, accompanies them as a new singer; she is believed to be Floyd's daughter but is really Louis'. A few problems come their way, involving Cleo's wanna-be gangsta rapper boyfriend, Lester (Affion Crockett), Floyd's fling with Rosalee (Jennifer Coolidge) and a lot more leading up to their big performance at the Apollo Theater, and the duo reform a bond that they lost 30 years ago.

In the late years of the 18th century, Felix and Peter, two journeymen, are travelling across the Spessart hills to Würzburg. Scared of the bandits that plague these parts, especially after a brief encounter with them, the two are glad to find an inn in the middle of the forest. However, it turns out that they have wandered into a den of thieves. The owners are in league with the bandits, who this very night plan to abduct Franziska, the Comtesse von Sandau, who is travelling through the forest with a group including her fiancé, Baron Sperling. Their coach is waylaid by a trap and the bandits direct them to the nearby inn. The waitress warns the journeymen of impending danger and they pass on the warning to the nobles. During the night, the brigands arrive. To escape, the Comtesse switches places with Felix and, in a man's clothes, escapes with Peter. Felix (as Comtesse), Franziska's maid and the pastor are taken to the bandits' lair. The bandits send Baron Sperling on his way to carry the demand for 20,000 Gulden to Graf Sandau, Franziska's father.

Mac Brewster, de l'agence de publicité Brewster, est nommé président du bal Artistes et Modèles et doit choisir une reine pour la soirée. En échange d'un million de dollars de campagne publicitaire, Mac promet à Alan Townsend, de Townsend Silver, que la reine du bal sera la "Townsend Silver Girl". Mac promet alors à sa petite amie, Paula Sewell, un modèle d'origine modeste, qu'elle aura le titre. Alan de son côté a rencontré Cynthia Wentworth, de Park Avenue, et lui décerne le titre de Townsend Girl. Mac, pendant ce temps, demande Paula en mariage et ils se fiancent. Considérant qu'elle a les capacités pour poser pour Alan, Paula se rend à Miami sous le faux nom de Paula Monterey. Paula fait du charme à Alan, et après avoir dansé ils font ensemble un plongeon dans la piscine à minuit, ce qui pousse Alan à surnommer Paula Cendrillon.
