It portrays real events during the Second World War when Wilhelm Canaris the head of German military intelligence was arrested and executed for his involvement with the 20 July Plot to overthrow Adolf Hitler. The film was a major success at the German box office, possibly because it allowed audiences to identify with a heroic German figure disassociated from Nazism. It is also known by the alternative title Canaris Master Spy.
Synopsis
L'amiral Canaris dirige à Berlin l'Abwehr depuis 1937. Comme tout homme puissant, il a des rivaux comme Reinhard Heydrich, le directeur du Reichssicherheitshauptamt. Canaris est tourmenté par d'autres problèmes : il se rend compte de plus en plus de l'inhumanité de la dictature d'Adolf Hitler et commence à douter. Il prend contact avec la Résistance et son chef, le comte Claus von Stauffenberg. Après le complot du 20 juillet 1944, Canaris est écarté de ses fonctions. Peu avant la fin de la guerre, la participation de Canaris est découverte, il est alors exécuté.Actors

The film begins shortly before the outbreak of World War II when ensign Jochen Marseille is located at a Luftwaffe (Air Force) Kriegsschule (War School) in Berlin, where he makes a negative impression on his superiors with daredevil stunts and undisciplined behavior. His friend and comrade, Robert Franke, helps spare him from severe punishment. His squadron moves to France after the outbreak of World War II. During the Battle of Britain, Marseille experiences the brutality of war for the first time when Franke is shot down over the English Channel and is posted missing for a short while. But after his comrade's return, Marseille is back to a carefree world of flying. A thoughtful conversation in a bar while playing a game of billiards with an elderly French civilian affects him and his fellow pilots only briefly. A short time later, his unit is transferred to the Afrikakorps in the North African Theater of Operations. Marseille, thanks to his outstanding flying skill and talent, quickly becomes the most successful fighter pilot.

Aleksey Teodorovic Vlassov (Yul Brynner) is a high ranking KGB official who defects while in France. He has with him highly-classified information as part of a deal with Western intelligence for his arrival in the United States. The debriefing is held at Langley by DCI Allan Davies (Henry Fonda) and MI6 representative Philip Boyle (Dirk Bogarde). Vlassov hands off a list of enemy agents in Western Europe including a deep penetration into NATO. Davies wants to begin operations to arrest the agents; however, those on the list suddenly begin to die off. The CIA also has suspicions over the authenticity of Vlassov's claims. The CIA discovers that a defection photo of Vlassov was taken in the Soviet Union, not in Turkey, judging from the contours of Mt. Ararat in the background. Vlassov also fails a lie detector test after he angrily protests about sexual related questions asked by the CIA during the test.
